Hello.  I was diagnosed with breast cancer last May. Started chemo and immunotherapy. In August they found a melanoma on my heel. I had a WLE and it was 1.1mm.  They did another excision and SLNB to be sure and the node came back with cancer cells.  Nothing else in heel area. Just node in groin.  Seeing a specialist oncologist on Monday but surgeon thinks surveillance because of scans I’ve had for breast cancer and immunotherapy.

but if immunotherapy was working why did I get cancer in the node?

Totally bewildered… my body is doing such crazy things.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I did things the other way around to you. I was diagnosed with melanoma in July 2016 and then triple negative breast cancer in March 2022.

I haven't had immunotherapy but know that there are different immunotherapy drugs used for different cancers so maybe the one used for TNBC doesn't have an affect on melanoma. However, as that's an educated guess, you'd be better off either asking your SCNS or posting the question in the Ask a Nurse section of the online community which reopens tomorrow morning.

It would be great if you could come back and let us know the answer as it might be useful for others in future.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for negative results from your WLE and SLNB.

  • I know how confusing this is I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 and 2 months later melanoma on right arm  0.8 mm deep. Didn't have sentinel node so am having ultrasounds as per NICE guidelines.and 6monthly reviews.

I have found my SCNS very supportive ,can you have a chat with her or contact your local Macmillan centre nurse. I wish you well,im Sure at the appointment on Monday will be able to get lots of information.

  • Thanks.  I met my nurse who seemed nice. The doctor said for stage 3 (1.1mm deep) it would normally be immunotherapy given SLNB was positive. But as I’m already having immunotherapy for breast cancer that is covered. So its regular scans and MRI every 6 months and CT every three months. I also get ultrasound on lymph nodes every three months. I guess looking at any spread. Nervous but checks are important.

  • Sounds like they are keeping a good eye on you. I've never had an MRI or CT which makes me very anxious . Wishing you all the best x

  • Sending you all the very best. Its such an anxious time and much as I’m so sorry to find another breast and melanoma patient, I’m glad I’ve heard from you  x.
