Biopsy Results Appointment

Good Evening All,

I had a biopsy on the 29th of June for suspected melanoma. The dermatologist was quite concerned and said it was pre cancerous at the minimum. I have received a letter today with another appointment booked for me on the 15th of August with no further information. Is this normal for all results to be face to face or is it likely to be bad news?

Thank you

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

The answer to your question is that it really depends on the protocol of the hospital that you are under. When I had a biopsy for an unusual lesion, which the dermatologist wasn't expecting to be any type of skin cancer, I was given the date for an appointment to get my results straight away so whether the results were good or bad I would have had them face-to-face. Equally, since the pandemic, some people have had their results by telephone or letter, whether good or bad.

I'll be keeping everything crossed that you'll be coming back here on the 15th with good news.

  • Hi latchbrook,

Thank you for your response and warm welcome. As you can tell I am a little nervous which is why I thought a community group would be the best place for me.

That's good for you to arrange them face to face I do think either way it is much better.

I really appreciate your reply and it has made me feel less nervous that so many people have similar experiences

  • Hi Keisha, my doctors were pretty sure my mole was melanoma sadly and I think I had a face to face appointment. As I nurse myself I knew it was bad news when I entered the room as I was introduced to one of the skin nurse specialists who obviously wouldn't have been there if it was benign!  They saw everyone again whether it was good or bad news.

At a different hospital after my further surgery (wide local excision' and lymph biopsy) however the surgeon seemed amazed I hadn't realised I was going to be given bad news as it was a face to face appointment and he does all his benign results over the phone!  How on earth would I know that?  As Latchbrook says different hospitals have different protocols.   Good luck x
