Hi,

I’m new to the forum. In 2018 I had two moles removed, one from each leg above the knees. One, on my left leg,  was malignant. I had a tiny bit more cancer in one lymph node and that was removed. No more treatment. Then last year I noticed small lumps under the skin on my left leg and they were confirmed as the cancer returning. A PET scan showed a mass in my ankle and it was assumed I had it in my bone too. I’m on Nivolumab once a month following 2 x double dose initially in sept/Oct 2020. I was ill for a couple of weeks and had a large dose of steroids which has resulted in my adrenal glands failing and I’m now on hydrocortisone. I have often asked how do they know the mass in my leg is cancer (which elevates me to stage 4) and it appears that they were not sure (it has never hurt or caused me problems) and it may be a fibrous something or other. So I will ask more about it next week at my face to face. I would like a biopsy of the bone area to confirm what it is. I was wondering if anyone else has had a bone biopsy and what it entails or been through similar situation? Thanks for reading. Sian.

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I was diagnosed with melanoma on my arm in December 2016 but I don't have any experience with bone mets. I've had a look through the group and I think that has bone mets so I'm tagging them into this reply in the hope that they'll pop on and tell you about how their bone mets were found.

It would be great if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi , Firstly welcome to the forum...I see that  has tagged me into her post as I have bone mets and may be able to offer you some advice. My mets are in my spine, femur & ribs and were originally diagnosed through a PET CT scan and a follow up X Ray. I have no experience of bone biopsy but my opinion is that a biopsy would usually be carried out to confirm cancer type whereas in your case the type of cancer is known ie, melanoma. This is only my opinion and maybe way off so take with a pinch of salt. Thankfully my disease is now under control through targeted therapy as I am on Dab / Tram and my scans are at present all favourable. The best advice I can give is to speak with your team at the hospital, ask the questions and push for the answers. I wish you the very best and please keep us informed.

  • Many thanks. Good luck with your treatment.

  • Thanks. I’ve updated my profile.

  • Hi Sianee,

I have a lesion on my left foot, on my navicular bone. My oncologist thought it was an odd place for a bone mets, so she ordered at biopsy, which proved it was melanoma on the soft tissue and adjacent navicular bone. I never had any pain in the foot. My treatment plan is Pembrolizumab q 6 weeks, and I'm on Xgeva q 4 weeks for bone support. My first followup PET showed the foot lesion shrank a little and I'm hopeful my next scan in June shows response as well.

Biopsy is the only way to prove what the mass is in your ankle as unfortunately some people do get two kinds of cancer, or maybe it is benign which would be ideal! Best wishes on beating this thing!!!
