Immunotherapy induced arthritis

Hi

i I had a lump on my thigh which was diagnosed as melanoma and it had spread to my lungs. I was treated with nivolumab and ipilibumab. I lasted three sessions before I got ill and was hospitalised with colitis and then pneumonitis which I understand is not that uncommon.

my last maintenance was last October and the immunotherapy has worked well but I have suffered with arthritis for over a year now as a result of my treatment. My question is are other people experiencing the same and are there any good news stories about it improving?

im under a rheumatologist and taking sulfasalozene

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read about your immunotherapy induced arthritis and, although I don't have any experience with this, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

  • Sorry for the late reply. I have had quite a few side effects and ended up also with immunotherapy induced arthritis.  It was initially treated with quite high doses of steroids. I have been under rheumatology for some  15 months now, taking Leflunomide and Sulfasalazine.  It took a long time to settle down , with more than one flare up during that time but is much improved.  Good luck !

  • Sorry to hear that you have ended up with immunotherapy induced arthritis.  Glad to hear it is much improved now.  I'm currently on immunotherapy but really struggling with leg and Joint pain and inflammation.  At the moment it's difficult to even get up and down the stairs.  Thanks for posting.  It's good to hear that there may be some hope.  If you don't mind me asking, is there a specific test or a process of eliminating any other causes?

  • Well, my experience was that after additional scans , I was quickly referred to rheumatology. They confirmed it was as a result of the immunotherapy but they did also tell me that I had pre- existing severe osteoarthritis  - which was news to me !  Apparently it had been evident in earlier scans pre the metastasis but it was symptomless.   Not sure if that helps …

    • That’s really helpful. Thank you. Hearing that the arthritis is settling down gives me hope. I’ve been under rheumatology since Christmas. Sulfasalozene since March. I’m back in a few weeks and will mention leflunomide. Last immunotherapy was last October.
