Awaiting Excision Biopsy Results

My husband had a suspicious mole on his back excised (full excision) about 3 weeks ago. He got an sms yesterday confirming a telephone appointment with Dermatology for next week - assuming to get his results. Feeling so so anxious about it and really just hoping for the best. The mole didn’t look great but I know it could also be a dysplastic nevus. Does the NHS always deliver results over the phone?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

Waiting for results is definitely nerve wracking and I'll be keeping everything crossed for good results.

As to how the results are delivered, well that differs from hospital to hospital. I've had mine face-to-face and by letter in the past. I know that since Covid lots of appointments are done over the phone as it can save time for both the patient and the clinician.

Do come back and let us know how your husband gets on.

  • Hi Anne

Thanks so much for your kind response. My husband just had the call and the mole came back as severely dysplastic but not melanoma! We are relieved. They have recommended a WLE for this however but my husband isn’t convinced and doesn’t really want to go back in for further surgery. We don’t know much about this. Do you have any advice?

    thanks!

  • That's great news  . I hope you've had a little, or big, celebration!

I've attached a patient information leaflet from the British Association of Dermatologists which explains why a severely dysplastic mole might need a WLE.

If he does decide to have it done then, just like the excisional biopsy, it's normally done under local anaesthetic and simply takes away an extra margin all around the site of the mole.

    Take care
