Hey guys.

I thinking of paying privately to have some scans done following diagnosis (2A) Before I do some investigating what scans show internal melanoma. Is PET gold standard? Ive heard I might have trouble getting a CT due to the contrast? Would MRI do?

Any help appreciate xx

    Hi

Prior to final diagnosis, I had:

    • A CT scan with contrast of my whole body
    • An MRI scan of my head
    • A PET-CT scan of my whole body

The MRI scan showed I had no tumours in my brain. The CT scan showed three tumours in my body. The PET scan showed that one of these three tumours was inactive and therefore not melanoma.

PET scans often show bright spots that are not tumours - for example lymph nodes can show up if they are infected.

I don't think the NHS would pay for scans that were not necessary, so I believe my diagnosis required all three scans.

I was given these scans because I was at least stage 3.

Are you sure that having scans will give you the peace of mind you crave?

    All the best,
