Hi.
I have had a single dark streak along my index finger on my right hand for 6 months. I went to Dr back in December and got referred to a specialist. They did mri  and ultrasound but could find nothing obvious so they decided to wait to see if the streak grew out.
It hasn't so now I have an appointment to have the nail removed and the bed biopsied.
I can find little info about the recovery from this on the net.
I was wondering if anyone could advise can I drive the next day? Will it be bandaged? Or stitches?
Thanks
Vikki
Thank you for that information. Makes me feel a bit more comfortable about it. I know it is rare to have cancer in the nail bed, but still can’t help but worry. My mum had a rare form of cancer and we didn’t find out till it was to late. So I just have 1001 things running through my head
I know that feeling.. don't think I stopped Google-ing stories of lines of nails and outcomes for the 6 months I was waiting :-(
Hi and welcome to the online community although I'm sorry you've had to find us
Nail melanoma, or subungual melanoma to give it it's correct name, is very rare so hopefully this won't be the cause of the line on your index finger.
If your appointment letter doesn't say what the appointment is for you would probably be best to give them a call on Monday to find out. It could be for a consultant to take a look at your finger to decide if a biopsy needs doing, or it could be that as dermatology have already seen photos of it they are planning on doing a biopsy. Either way you'll feel better knowing what's going to happen on Tuesday.
If you are having a biopsy then ask when it's done what the current length of time is for biopsy results to come back. That way you won't be worrying if they come back quickly or take a long time as you'll know that's normal for your hospital. You could also ask how you'll be given the results. For example, some hospitals only make an appointment for you to be given the results if it is melanoma whereas others make an appointment whether the results are good news or bad.
Best wishes for Tuesday
x
Have you had the results of your biopsy yet ?
Thank you for your help and guidance. I haven’t taken on board your ideas of questions to ask. So thank you again
Did you get chance to phone the hospital today to find out what tomorrow's appointment is for ?
Sadly I didn’t had a mad busy day in work... I’m guessing it wil just be to look at it closer and maybe take more photos. I’m sure it will be nothing and won’t have anything to worry about... I’m just grateful that they are taking it seriously and jo just fobbing me off x
Hi, I'm currently dealing with a brown streak in my nail. I've set up my first dermatologist appt for next Monday. I'm wondering how you are now? Hope you're well!
Hi when i went for my first appointment the doctor looked at it under his magnifying glass he measured it and looked at the colour closely. I had to go back again a couple of months later so he could look at it again to see for any changes.... thankfully there wasnt any changes and he was happy that i must have just knocked it and it wasnt anything to worry about. I still have the mark on my nail now. He just advised me to go back if it became darker. But it hasnt. Hope yours goes ok x
