Positive lymph nodes after WLE / SNB

Hi all,

Can you advise what options you may have been offered if in a similar situation?

I was diagnosed with superficial spreading melanoma with a high mitosis rate so was offered a WLE /SNB which I opted for.

Results came back today that original site clear but lymph nodes show spread.

Plan is being discussed at MDT next week (as I was diagnosed with breast cancer a month after my skin cancer diagnosis) - but just wondered what plans / impact of targeted or immunotherapy is - as long as CT is clear I guess.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that the results of your SLNB show that the cancer has spread to your lymph nodes.

There are quite a few people in the group who have had similar and I hope that by bumping your post back to the top of the discussion list again they'll come on and share their experiences with you.

Let us know what treatment they decide to give you.

    ((hugs))

  • Hi. Sorry you are going through a double diagnosis. I’m sure the MDT meeting will give some clarity on next steps and what they think is best. What was your original melanoma staging? X

  • Hi,

It was originally a stage 2 for my melanoma.

My breast cancer hasnt spread to my lymph nodes.

Thanks for reading my post x

  • Melanoma was found in one of the four lymph nodes removed during my SLNB. My CT and MRI came back clear and I remained a stage 3A. Immunotherapy wasn’t really offered to me and neither was targeted therapy (my BRAF results had gone ‘missing’).

  • Thanks for the response.

My original removal wasn't deemed big enough to be tested for BRAF, and although I asked if it was tested fron the cells found in the lymph nodes it supposedly wasn't tested... but it seems weird if that's the defining step between targeted or immunotherapy.

  • The hospital responsible for testing the lymph nodes changed their story from the sample being ‘lost’ to the sample not containing enough DNA to test. I questioned this with the oncologist, as I would have thought the sample undergoes DNA replication in order to obtain enough DNA. I have since found out I have the BRAF mutation, three months after my hospital were informed of the result by the testing hospital.

  • Flushed. Thats where I wonder if I might be. In terms of 'not enough' sample from residual in lymph nodes. My CNS did say they can do 'clever things' ... but only I guess if there is enough to test. We shall see ...
