Fat graft

Hi, sorry if there is already a discussion somewhere about this but I can’t seem to find any information about it.

i had a WLE and SLNB a week ago for a melanoma on my upper left arm. I know that it is very early days in the healing process but I have been really upset by the severity of the deformity in my arm.

does anyone know if a fat graft or other corrective surgery can be done in the future for this? And does anyone have personal experience of it.

Thanks,

Lynsey

  • Hi Lynsey/

I had a WLE on my upper left arm too and you can barely see the scar now

When I had my follow up 2 weeks after surgery, I mentioned to the nurse how bad the wound looked. It was a very high ridge and I'd expected it to be flat. She explained that as everything settled it would go down and I'd be left with a nice smooth area.

You don't say how your arm looks but, if it's like mine was, everything will hopefully turn out okay.

  • Thanks for your reply and that’s great that your scar has settled well.

its still early days for me post surgery however I do have what was referred to as a large crater deformity and have been told that this won’t fill out.

I spoke to the plastic surgeon at my check up yesterday and he said there are options for this which can be discussed later and it’s possible that the hole can be closed over. However this wouldn’t be offered by the NHS. In the meantime I have been referred to a psychologist to help me deal with the shock. The most important thing for now is to hope for clear biopsy results and I’ll deal with everything else later.

    thanks again for replying.

    take care x

  • Ah, I see. Yours sounds like the complete opposite of mine and is obviously the reason my surgeon created a ridge so that no 'crater' formed.

You're right that clear biopsy results are important but so is how you're left feeling emotionally. I hope the psychologist can help you with that.

    ((hugs))
