Hi, I've had stage 4 melanoma for two years, all was under control until I suddenly became very ill in July and multiple brain mets were found. Thankfully the whole brain radiotherapy that they tried as a last resort has worked, the mets have shrank in size and I'm not feeling unwell at all!
We have a holiday booked to Iceland in February, the consultant said she isn't going to tell me not to go on holiday as I need to live my life but she did say there could be side effects like headaches on the plane. I have another appointment with her for the results of my latest brain MRI at the beginning of January so I'm going to discuss this again with her then.
I just wondered if anyone had experience of this personally and had any side effects or illness while flying? I'm 50-50 at the moment as to whether we should go so just trying to get lots of info from all directions!
Thank you.
Hi Alibobs
That's great to read that the brain mets have shrunk considerably in size and a holiday to Iceland sounds fantastic. I haven't been but have two sets of friends who have and they say the scenery is stunning.
I also don't have any experience of flying with brain mets so did a search in the group to see if anyone else has mentioned it. Unfortunately, I drew a blank but, of course, there could be others in the group who have flown but just not posted about it.
I think having a further chat with the consultant is a sensible idea.
Anne
Hi Alibobs,
So sorry to hear you’ve developed brain mets after everything seemed to be heading in the right direction. Melanoma such a sneaky bugger. My partner has has SRS 3 times now (Aprim 2022, May 2024 and just last week) - all on the same mets which just won’t quite die.
We went on holiday to Ibiza and Mallorca in June 2022 which was 2 months after his treatment & it was absolutely fine. We’ve also done long haul to Australia twice with no issues. The only ‘official’ advice our team have given is that they don’t recommend flying <72hours after treatment, so you’re well out of that window now. They also encourage us to live our lives as normal & have never advised against any of our travel plans. I think you should be covered by the European Health Insurance Card in Iceland if anything was to happen while you were away. Hope this helps aid your decision! Good luck with your scans in January. Are you still on immunotherapy?
Hi,
Thank you for your reply, really good to hear you've been able to travel with no issues for your partner. It really helps to know that.
Yes I'm still having immunotherapy every 4 weeks, I'll be due to have it 11 days before we're supposed to fly so pretty much in the middle of the cycle.
Lots for me to think about before I make a final decision I think!
