Hi everyone
I hope it’s ok if I post here.
Im a 30 year old male in the U.K. I also have health anxiety. I work as a Healthcare Professional at a large teaching hospital
I have used sunbeds quite a bit over the year; for the last 10 years or so. I had worried about melanoma in the past, but stupidly continued because I thought it wouldn’t happen to me
At the start of October, I noticed a new mole beneath my ankle. It was dark and looked different to my other moles. I decided to see the GP, who looked at it with a Dermoscope. He said it was 1mm X 1.5mm and was a reticular mole with a darker centre. He said we should watch and wait, but that it was too small for Dermatology to do anything about
I wasn’t happy with this so I went to see a Dermatologist. Initially when looking at it, he said it is almost certainly benign. He took a photo of it through the dermoscope to show me. He then looked at all my other moles, and then he started talking about needing to remove it.
it was removed 4 days later (roughly 2 weeks after I first noticed it). He still thinks it’s more likely to come back as benign or dysplastic but he said we couldn’t exclude melanoma because
1. It’s darker than my other moles
2. my history of sunbed use
waiting for the results (nearly 3 weeks now since removal!!!) is so difficult.
I don’t even know why I’m posting here. I just need to let it off my chest. I’m hoping I caught it early. It was removed 2 weeeks after first noticing it, and photos confirm it wasn’t there 2 months ago
DONT USE SUNBEDS!!!!
It sounds like you've done a great job at advocating for your health, that takes courage! I had a suspicious mole removed yesterday that's been getting bigger, darker, and uneven for around a year. Like you I've used sunbeds and worshipped the sun far too much in my life (I'm 32).
The dermatologist was very optimistic and seemed to think it's likely to be benig. 75% of skin referrals get the all clear. I had to wait 6 weeks for the appointment and I've done so much worrying. I've now got 6-8 weeks until I get the biopsy results so I feel your pain.
It's such a wake up call that we're not immortal and ultimately something positive can come if we change our relationship to tanning. This forum won't give us answers but it certainly provides comfort. I'd recommend speaking to a counsellor about the health anxiety to understand it better.
Best of luck x
Hello Rosebud, thanks for the message
the wait is awful! I’ve read online about people getting new very dark moles at our age and it’s simply been a dysplastic mole.
but it’s such a classic way for melanoma to present that I can’t breathe properly until I get the results.
Hope everything turns out well for your biopsy. Hopefully it won’t take the full 6-8 weeks! x
I’m also 3 weeks into a 6-8 week wait for biopsy results. The waiting is so so painful.
I have also used sunbeds when I was younger and noticed one day that a mole I have always had, that was once round, had changed to an uneven shape. Under the dermoscope it also shown it was 3 different colours.
best of luck to you both x
