Hello, my 84 year old mum has just been diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma and I was looking for some advice if possible. She was actually diagnosed by a different specialist who has now referred her to the haematologist but she’s been told it will take at least two weeks before she sees him. My concern is that she is very weak, can’t eat much and is suffering from sleepless nights and night sweats, itching etc. I feel like two weeks is a long time to wait to see the haematologist for staging and treatment options considering her physical state. Should I be trying to get her seen earlier? It’s almost impossible to speak with a GP at her surgery as they are so busy. I am so worried particularly as I know Mantle Cell is a more serious form of lymphoma.
Any advice would be gratefully received. She’s so lovely and I can’t bear to see her suffering.
Sorry to hear about your mum, simple answer is you can only try and get an earlier appointment, Heamatology Units are notoriously busy places but worth a try.
The link below will take you to some information from Lymphoma Action a small UK Lymphoma Charity, they have lots of information and run regular online Lymphoma Zoom support groups and indeed a great Lymphoma Buddy Service.
Progression will most likely depend on what stage your mum is at as Mantle Cell can be like a low grade slow growing NHL.
Hi and sorry to read about your mum, you could ring the haematologists secretary and see if the referral has come through and ask if she can be seen asap, I was seen within 24 hours of the surgeon making my referral, though I had to wait 2 weeks to go back to see the surgeon to find out about the biopsy results.
