My dad has been diagnosed with lung cancer that has spread to his lymph nodes. We wasnt told much apart from that he can not be treated due to other health conditions.  What am I to expect?

  • Hello , I’m sorry to hear about your Dad, the news for you sounds like it was a big shock. I know when I had my diagnosis which was melanoma that had spread to my lymph nodes it was a shock and the expectation was for treatment to start ASAP, for me there was a delay as I wasn’t well enough to start treatment so I was put on steroids and reviewed the next week. I am hoping that this is something similar to what your Dad is going through, and that there might be some treatment in the near future.

You have asked “what am I to expect”, and I’m going to take that literally as what can you expect rather than what can your Dad expect. You might expect to go through many emotions and wonder what you can do to help your Dad, and what help is available for you as you will probably go through your own stresses. I noticed this was your first post after joining the community, so I was thinking that you may like to join the friends and family group to hear from others who are in a similar situation, as you look through the titles of the discussions you will see many people unfortunately coping with a parents diagnosis, here’s the link to the group.

I am thinking you might have meant what will happen to my Dad and as my cancer is not the same and has a different treatment I am hoping that someone else may come forward with their experience but that experience may be different to your Dads. You may want to join the lung cancer group, to ask the same question or perhaps a more specific set of questions as I expect you may have many. A look through the information and support sections may also help, I found them and the Macmillan books that can be downloaded really helpful, I’ve put a few links below incase they help.

The Macmillan support line 0808 808 0000 may also be a great support.
