Hello I was told yesterday that I have incurable cancer.

This has come completely out of the blue. At the moment I am in limbo and absolutely terrified. My son advised me to come on here as I can share with people who have been in a similar situation. The medics have been unable to find any tumours and so far it is cancer cells in the fluid drawn off my lung. So I believe the cells have metastacised? and they are looking for how best to treat me. I believe chemotherapy is going to be involved. I just can't help thinking the worst and the waiting is really getting me down. Has anyone any advice please ? I hate being so pathetic as I am used to being self sufficient and efficient (I have been widowed 12 years now my husband died at the age of 57)

  • Hello,

What a shock for you and your family. I’m waiting for news as to whether I have spread or not. It’s a very scary time. I don’t know what your GP is like but mine has been very helpful. She has increased my dose of fluoxetine to help me remain calmer so I can have some sleep. This has helped to stop me worrying quite so much. The waiting is the worst time. Do you have a Maggie’s near you. I haven’t been there yet but depending on the results I think I’m going to want to meet people with similar problems.

I recommend talking to one of the MacMillan nurses on this site. They may be able to give you other support taking into account where you live. I hope someone else will be along soon to give you more support. Sending love

  • Thank you so much for sharing. Sadly my GP historically has not been good. I don't even know whether he is aware yet. I am glad you have some support sleeping is an issue but I am in a lot of pain from another ongoing issue. Lets hope we both get some answers soon. Love and best wishes from me to you.
