My husband went for a chest x-ray last weds and they did a CT scan the same day.  He had a call from our GP the next morning to go up the hospital .. they told him he had stage 4 lung cancer that had spread in his liver and some lymph node's.  We were knocked sideward. they kept him in for 3 days as his sodium levels were dangerously low.  They have told us its not treatable and he is not strong enough for chemo... and if he did have it and in the small chance it worked, would only put days or  weeks on his life's expectancy.  We are absolutely lost, he is 66 and have retired very recently.... its so hard to take everything in.

  • Dear Sbf3, what really devastating news for you and your husband.  Lung cancer is so random.  I would hope that you've been put under the care of an oncologist rather than (just) a GP. Receiving this news and without a care plan for going forward is the scariest part.  I know that many people survive Stage 4 for many years.  I wonder if you could get another appointment with the oncologist, or even a second opinion, to discuss more options for your husband.  At the very least, perhaps a palliative care appointment would be good too.  Sending many strongs and good wishes to you both.

  • That is such big news to try and take in.. I'm so sorry this is happening to you. As Pamela has said, people live years with stage 4, I agree I really would be asking for a second opinion from another hospital/oncologist - if he's not strong enough right now, could he become strong enough? What makes them think he isn't strong enough? - not questions I'm asking you, questions I'd be asking them! I really hope you manage to speak with someone, sending you love & prayers xx
