New to this group. My lovely partner has just got a diagnosis of lung cancer. To say I am devastated is putting it mildly. He has been getting these awful night sweats - just wondering if anyone else had those, and any tips for minimising them?

So any tips would be gratefully recieved.

  • Hi  welcome to the group, but sorry to hear about your partner. It is terrifying when a loved one is given a cancer diagnoses. I hope you find this group helpful, but you may also want to join the Carers only forum  and Family and friends forum  as it is also important that you look after yourself whilst supporting your partner.

Hot flushes/sweats at night are exhausting. I always sleep with a fan facing me in bed at night, I also find this helps with my breathing. It is best to avoid alcohol, hot drinks and hot baths before bed as these will also make the flushes worse. Hope this helps.

  • Loose, light weight sleepwear, a fan, and staying well hydrated will all help.  If you can, avoid synthetic sheets.

Sometimes hormones are prescribed for people experiencing severe night sweats.  Try the simple stuff first but don't hesitate to ask for better solutions from the treating team if the simple stuff isn't providing much relief.

  • Hi.

Sorry you are both going through this.

Not a medical  tip but just a practical one from when we went through this with my husband. We used to keep a pile of clean bath towels in the bedroom. He would put one on top of the base sheet when he went to bed. If he woke in the night and had been sweating very badly he could just swap it for a new one. Back to sleep in no time. Not a cure but a lot less hassle than changing sheets in th e middle of the night.

    Good luck x

  • Thank for that it is terrifying and I will join those groups as well Yes a fan is a good idea and tried that last night and he had a bit of a better sleep

  • Thank you Chrlleissoo I will give that a go
