Hi everyone

My mum has been diagnosed with stage 1 lung cancer.  We don't know what type as she is 91 and they don't want to do a biopsy at her age.  She has been offered SABR radiotherapy but I am worried about the side effects.  The consultant also mentioned that we could watch the growth of it and then use a lower dose of radiotherapy.  The other issue we have is that it is about 1cm away from her heart and close to the lung wall.  We are finding it difficult making a decision on which treatment to go for.

would the lower dose of radiotherapy mean fewer side effects?  what di you guys chose and how did it affect you?

Thanks you for your help

Penny

  • Hi Penny

The main side effects of radiotherapy is tiredness, which continues after the treatment has stopped. The lower dose may produce less side effects; however it may not have the same impact on the tumour. Best to discuss this with Mum's cancer team.

I don't know if this will help;  in 2018 I had the privilege of accompanying an elderly neighbour to 20 daily sessions of radiotherapy. Due to underlying health issues neither an invasive biopsy or  surgery were not viable options. To say she handled the radiotherapy like a trooper would be a gross understatement!

    Thank you

  • Hi Ploppy Candle, and welcome to the group, although I am very sorry to hear about your mum's diagnoses. If you look in the Diagnoses and treatment section in topics, you will see a thread at the top for radiotherapy tips. There is a link there to take you to the blog. There is also this blog here what-is-radiotherapy which you might find useful.

Also you may want to join the family-and-friends-forum where you can talk to other people going through a similar situation to yourself.

    Take care
