Hi my name is Tracy and I found out 8 weeks ago I have small cell (right) lung cancer with a mass over 8cm which has collapsed my lung, I have had 2 chemo sessions so far and have a lot of medication to take at home, my daughter has moved back home to help which I feel really guilty about but so thankful at the same time. As the weeks go on I find myself getting a little more tired but I will keep pushing myself to get things done even if  I have to take more breaks than before, I am eating well because of the steroids which I am thankful for as I had no appetite for several months prior to diagnosis. I follow everything my doctors ask of me and try and keep my mind positive, I am scared though, its the one part I don't show anyone as i don't want them worrying about me any more than they already do.

  • Hi, sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

I have a close friend who, like you, was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in the left lung.  It was discovered when her breathing became pretty bad and her daughter took her to A&E.  After tests and X-ray she was found to have a partially collapsed lung and and the part of her lung that had not collapsed was filled with fluid.  After a CT scan they also found a 7cm mass on the lung.

After an emergency lung drain and a lung biopsy, it was confirmed as late stage small cell cancer, inoperable and incurable and she was put on emergency palliative chemotherapy the following day.  Her first CT scan showed a really good reduction in size and after her chemotherapy finished she was put on a two year course of immunotherapy. To reassure you, that was two year's ago and she is still going strong with CT scans showing a stable appearance.  She finished her two year course of immunotherapy last September, but she has been allowed another two year course.

I hope my information helps you to not feel too scared and, with today's remarkable treatments, lung cancer is no longer the death sentence it used to be.

Please keep in touch with us all on here, we have all been or are going through cancer, including myself.  Any questions you may have or if you just want a chat, this forum is here for you.

    Very best wishes.

    Ann

  •  hi about 10 years ago i had a biopsy on my right lung and it was None small cell cancer so had a wedge resection at southampton, a year or so it was back in exactly the same place so i had a lobectomy on the right lung,  since ive had a shadow on left lung had sabre for that  , then i had esofigal cancer , but with todays marvelous surgeons and treatments im now clear (almost) i dont worry about it as yes i only do what i can, i used to decorate a room in 1 day , now it takes  a week just to get ready, so yes you will slow down but most important keep positive because worrying about it wont help you or them, you already have it , what are you going to do about it. keep positive

  • Thank you so much for your reply. That has actually really put my mind at ease to hear your friends story. I will keep in touch and hope you are doing well with your treatment also

  • Thank you for your reply! You are very right, i guess i should just remind myself its okay to slow down as long as i keep fighting! Congratulations on being (almost) clear! Keep strong
