My mum had 1 cycle of palliative chemo (Carboplatin and Gemcitabine), and in the break it was like she was hit by a bus and is struggling so much with stairs and to walk. She is also struggling with mood, and some blurry vision but mostly just extreme fatigue.
From a very active glamorous 61 year old with a sudden u expected diagnosis of stage 4 squamous cell nsclc lung cancer, she can now barely walk and so they stopped the day 8 of the second cycle and said this was temporary half to regain some energy before the next round. We are so scared incase this is a sign are going to stop the chemo.
She also has a ct scan after the first 2 cycles (although one was only half complete) is this routine? We are so worried what it will show as there was no baseline ct scan since months before her chemo started.
Yes, I was exactly the same after just one session of chemo and immunotherapy. From walking two or three miles several times a week, reasonably fit and active, to a complete wreck within hours. My husband had to accompany me to every appointment as I could barely walk. As for stairs, one step at a time was all I could manage. I'm sorry your mum has to endure this, but it does get easier. I'm still having immunotherapy which comes with its own problems, but I'm a lot stronger now and out walking almost every day again. I'm a fair bit older than your mum too.
Thank you so so much for your response that is so helpful to hear. So glad to hear that it turned around for you. Keep walking. Amazing. X
Thank you so much that means a lot. I am praying that she does, it’s scary being told stage 4 advanced and not curable or operable and that it’s only palliative chemo. so I am hoping that this palliative chemo actually does something to help her. I am praying it does something huge to help. I’m praying for a miracle. No one told her a prognosis but they made it all sound very bad. We’ve never seen the first actual oncologist since it’s different people and it’s all terrifying. No one has given a time and I don’t think I anyone would tell me if my mum isn’t asking it. She is so depressed that her mobility is affected so suddenly that she has started taking sertraline but seems even more fatigued. X
Hi Amber,
We are in the same boat with my mum. Her chemo also stopped because of intense fatigue and dizziness. Oncologist has done some tests to rule out Infection and low iron ( maybe an idea to get your mum checked too). If she doesn't improve them oncologist will do ascan to see if the previous cycles made any difference..hope the best for your mum!

Hi Donna,
Mum had caeboplatin 6 cycles -no effect.
2 cycle of Caleyx- no effect
6 doses of Paclitaxil- which has hit her like nothing before. Every inch of her muscle aches and she can't lift her arms. Her head hurts too.Severe fatigue and pain in whole body. We are very stressed.

Paclitaxel is well known for causing aches and pains. I have had it and they started about 4 days after receiving it. It does eventually improve after a few days. It was painful to walk - I was holding onto furniture. Let her team know to perhaps get stronger painkillers. I hope it improves soon.
They may need to tweak her dose next time. It's evil stuff!
All the best
Cindy
