hi from matts,i am 75 and having lung cancer surgery soon.anyone on here to tell me what its going to be like ,ie procedure actual surgery and after efects thanks,

  • Hello matts,

I had surgery just over 10 years ago for removal of my right lung. This involved open surgery (not keyhole which is what most have) which was done on a Tuesday and I was discharged on Sunday, so not a long stay in hospital (although many are in for even fewer days than that).

They like to have you to be up and moving around very soon after and will most likely have a physio or similar give you advice on exercises to follow. It's important to keep up with these and to walk - obviously it will be a little more difficult at first but take it easy and slowly build up and you should soon regain strength and should be as good as before in no time. They will also send you home with necessary painkillers for shorter term use during your recovery.

I hope all goes well for you, if you have any specific questions just ask and I'll do my best to answer.

    Derek.

Made in 1956. Tested to destruction.
  • Hi Matts ,

you do not say what type of surgery ,I had lung surgery (lobectomy) two years gone July ,which was the middle lobe of my right lung ,it was not an easy surgery to face but my surgeon was very good at explaining ,the removal was VATS ,which meant only a small 4 inch scar on my right side ,the surgery itself was a success ,afterwards i had to wait with a chest drain on for 5 days ,and then for another 4 days at home with a portable chest drain ,but not everyone is the same ,all i can say is to get up and walking as soon as you can it helps .it is difficult to sneeze/cough and laugh for a few weeks ,make sure you have a soft cushion to hug .I have been told this July past that my scans are clear and my surgeon discharged me ,i wish you luck  and hopefully the surgery will be a success
