Mum was diagnosed with extensive SCLC in October 22. It had spread outside her kung to lymph nodes and pleura. She successfully completed 4 cycles of chemo and radiotherapy and the cancer stayed inactive for 22 months. In September we learned it was active again in the same lymph nodes and lung and chemo was restarted. Carboplatin and Etoposide.
After cycle 2 she is still coping well with the side effects, and the cancer symptoms seem to be subsiding - her cough in particular.
i am so proud of how she is battling through and we are really hopeful this round will be another success.
My query is where we will go from here? Everything I read about seems to suggest this type of cancer only recurrs once and usually has a very sad outcome. If it’s possible the chemo works and the cancer shrinks back again, will it keep on coming back and will tthe doctors keep on offering her chemo?

Hi BHJO sorry to hear the news about your mum. I know how scared you must be feeling. I don’t have SCLC my cancer is a sarcoma, but what I can tell you is everyone’s cancer journey is different and no 2 people react the same to treatment. What may work well for one person may not work well for another and visa versa. The only person that can truly answer this question for you is mum’s oncologist.
The good thing is mum having treatment and where there is treatment there is always hope, and it sounds like she is doing really well on the chemo. She sounds like a strong woman, she has been through such a lot already ( I read your profile ) but I’m sure she’s still got a lot of fight left.
