Hi all

I recently explained that my mum was part of lung screening and they discovered 1.5cm nodule.Forward on nearly 2months and pet scan and lung biopsy 2weeks ago we were called in today to see surgeon to be told that the biopsy results were negative and that it has grown and it’s not behaving like cancer. He needs another pet scan and has booked her in for surgery for lower 1/3 right lobectomy. He says the MDT meeting they don’t know what it is but most certainly not behaving at all like cancer. If pet scan shows shrinking they won’t operate. The original pet scan we were told that area is hot…he’s says it isn’t it’s warm ish.We are very confused but also maybe extremely happy with what he’s saying.Has anybody else every experienced anything like this and to be told initially that it’s very concerning and pet scan hot.

Thank you all

  • Hi

I'm not a member of this forum but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

While you're waiting for replies, it would be great if you could put something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. • Hi Cookie robin

This is potentially fabulous and positive news.

After my successful treatment for Small Cell Lung Cancer, the routine scanning picked up at least one nodule in my lungs and so the monitoring continued until they were happy that it was just a nodule.  My consultant told me that if every adult underwent a full body scan, the majority of people would be shown to have at least one non-cancerous nodule somewhere in their body.

Good luck for the next PET scan.  I wish you the best possible outcomes.

  • Thank you so much for reply…me and my mother are just a little confused. When a nodule was discovered on routine lung screening we saw the consultant lung specialist who said after many tests that it’s really concerning, the pet scan is hot but there is 10% chance it isn’t.Kind of saying it’s cancer without saying the word…..

Then biopsy fast forward to seeing then the thoracic surgeon for results who said “do you know why your here”..mother said yes for results to see what kind of cancer it is…his reply was he looked at my mother like what are you on about and “No,No it isn’t”…biopsy is negative and it’s not BEHAVING like cancer…we have all had meeting today and we all agree but we also agree that we don’t know what it is…it has grown from pet scan to ct lung biopsy image but the biopsy image could be blood etc.So another pet scan on Wednesday.

sorry for long winded reply Slight smile

  • Hi

A negative biopsy is brilliant news.

I understand your frustration; however neither myself or anyone else on here can answer why you seem to have been given conflicting detail.  Only your medical team can provide the information you are looking for.
