Nosebleed post-radiotherapy

Just a question, I am just over three weeks post-SABR radiotherapy for left upper lung cancer.  I've not been too bad regarding side-effects, just the usual fatigue, dry cough and general 'can't be bothered with anything' mood off and on.

Two day's ago my cough got a bit worse associated with head pain when I coughed, apparently this can be normal.  But, I woke this morning at 6.15am after a restless night, I sat up to go to the toilet and felt a drip from my left nostril and was surprised to see fresh red blood, as I stood up the drip got quicker and I got through quite a few tissues before reaching the bathroom. It carried on for only about a minute and a half before easing off, and I nearly wet myself trying to use the toilet and stem the flow of blood at the same time.  This is the first time I have ever had a nosebleed like that in my life (I'm 74), and it gave me a bit of a fright to be honest.

I was wondering if anyone who has had the same treatment has experienced this.  If it happens again I will ring the cancer nurse specialist as it is not listed as a 'side effect'.  It's probably not related to the lung cancer, but probably related a bug I've picked up as everyone I know seems to have just got over respiratory bug or have just got it.

  • Hi   please ring your lung nurse today. It may well be a bug that you have picked up, but something like this needs to be mentioned especially as you have not long finished the radiation.

I hope you are ok, this must of been quite scary for you, waking up like this and seeing blood and not knowing what was happening. Hopefully your nurse will reassure you, and it was it won’t happen again.
