My dad found he had Small Cell Lung Cancer by accident as he had an x-ray on a bruised rib after being hit by a car door!  His joint chemo-radiation was due to start on Monday, but a routine blood test showed he has low sodium levels (hyponatremia) of 122 (should be above 135), they have had to admit him and give him sodium to get it back to an acceptable level.  He can't start treatment until this happens!!!

Has anyone else had this issue?

  • Hi NanceHope, sorry to hear about your Dad. Low sodium is common with small cell lung cancer. If left untreated it can lead to headaches and confusion, so it is good they are treating him.

Hopefully it is sorted quickly and he can start on his treatment plan. X

  • Hi yes I have got SCLC and about a month or so ago after a blood test they found my Magnesium, Potassium calcium and sodium levels were very low I ended up in A+E overnight and most of the next day on an IV drips.

It seemed the water tablets I am on were lowering my potassium levels but that didn't account for the rest of it, after chemo I have such a lot of tablets to take so I wonder if other tablets were the cause of the rest of my blood problems.

So now I have to keep regular checks on my levels 3 weeks ago when I went for some chemo they found my Magneesum levels needed topping on I went on a 3 hr drip.

After my A+E visit and all hours of IV I felt on to of the world you wouldn't believe how it refreshes you unfortunately I am feeling very low at the moment but Monday is my next blood test.

Hope all goes well with your Dad and he gets treatment soon.
