Supporting my dad with his Cancer

Evening,  my dad is 78 and just been diagnosed this week with Lung Cancer and secondary brain cancer, liver cancer and bone cancer.   His biopsy is not until this Friday and will be taken from the liver.  Although he has not had the biopsy yet the consultant has advised it is cancer but they need to check on what type.  They have advised that it is not curable but may be treatable depending on outcome of biopsy.  My dad is ex military and has never been ill and this has come as a massive shock to us all BUT my dad is being very positive and wants to ensure that my mum is fully cared for in all of this.  My dad is normally my mums carer as she has the onset of dementia, diabetes, walks with a stick and a history of falls.  I was just wanting to ask everyone for any advice at all on how I should be helping them, any hints and tips to ensure that my dad and mum are looked after.  I am staying all day with them and ensuring they dont do anything and I am planning to move in with them at the end of this week to ensure I am at hand 24 hours a day.  Any suggestions or help is really appreciated.  Thank you x

  • I'm sorry to hear this, I have uncurable cancer also. This isn't a hopeless situation and hats off to your Dad for his positivity!

It sounds like you are addressing the first main thing and that is showing that you are there for them, that is the most important thing. After that I think the practical side of things, washing clothes and dishes, planning appointments, picking up medication etc

It can be very hard as an outsider as you can sometimes not know what to do for the best. It sounds like you are doing amazing x

  • Thank you so much for your reply and so sorry you are in the same situation.

My house is on the market and I am moving in to my parents house to ensure I look out for them both.  Appreciate the advice and agree even those little jobs will hopefully take away the pressure.

I hope you have great support around you x
