hi I got diagnosed with T1 lung cancer on the 19th of December and I go to The Freeman Hospital on Monday morning at 11am at the cancer centre but because my cancer is very small and not spread and because of my cope and emphysema my lungs can’t cope with an operation so do you think they will be able to offer me treatment or because my lung cancer is only T1 very small that they will just keep an eye on it? Because I’m hoping they give me treatment to get rid of it I’m so worried they just want to keep an eye on it by check ups and scans rather than giving me treatment with it being so small, has anyone been in my position that could give me advice that’s if you don’t mind please love Yvonne xx

  • Do you know what type of lung cancer you have and whether the biopsy showed it as low grade or high grade.

Often when surgery isn't an option or is declined by the patient, radiotherapy is offered instead, but that decision is only made once a considerable amount of information is known.

  • I don’t know what sort of cancer it is as I couldn’t even have a biopsy because of my copd and emphysema being so bad I just had pet ct scans love Yvonne xx

  • Hi Yvonne17, waiting to hear whether treatment is an option is such an awful time.  It is impossible for any of us to say which treatment plan your oncologist will chose, or wether it will be a wait and watch scenario.  But please know that they will chose whatever is best for you.

Good luck for Monday, please let us know how you get on x

  • Please help me what am I going to do if they say no treatment needed yet we will keep an eye on you with scans until we feel that treatment is necessary? I will be absolutely passed myself my anxiety now is awful. I keep thinking I’m going to get told off by the doctor because I don’t need treatment because it’s to small, or what if I have to wait for treatment and all of a sudden my lung cancer just spreads ? Love Yvonne xx

  • Some people are told they will watch and wait, especially if it is small, but that does mean they will keep a very close eye on it with scans, so there is no way it will get out of control.

I can tell you are very anxious, and you still have a few days to go until you find out. Can I suggest you call the Macmillan support line and talk to someone today. It is completely confidential and I know you will feel better for making the call. 0808 808 00 00. X

  • Hi Yvonne ,i was told intially that they would do watch and wait with me back in 2021 ,because the nodule on my lung was so small and after i had a PET scan it did not ligth up ,it was only 8mm ,i had a follow up scan 6 months later and it was exactly the same ,then again 6 months later it had doubled in size ,so they then said it was best to operate and remove which they did in july last year .All i am saying is they will keep a close eye on it ,but make sure you ask everything you need to ask when you see your doctor on monday ,write your questions down so you remember them and take someone with you if you can also take Chellsimmo s advice and ring the help line ,

    • I am in the same situation to you Yvonne or very close I have a 1cm by 1cm nodule I am waiting for all my results next Wednesday they were able to take a Biospy from me as I am only 43 and pretty healthy for a E cig smoker mine has not shown up anywhere in my blood but I am waiting for the PET scan results to come back next week but I am praying that they can cut this out of my lung as luckily well I think I maybe anywhen as the scans show it’s on the edge of my lung but I am also worried it may spread before they operate or they may say wait and watch which I won’t be able to handle as since I was told in A&E I keep having panic attacks
  • Hi Yvonne, it really is a hard path we have to walk. I was diagnosed March 2023 with squamous cell carcinoma Stage T1bNxMx. I was told my right lung would have to go. I got myself all worked up, terrified my self. Saw the surgeon on July 13th last week to be told no chance I could have surgery. I have copd and mild emphysema but my lung function was only 60%. He wasn't prepared to risk an operation. Instead he has referred me to the oncologist to see if I can have radical radiation with maybe chemo on top. I'm 69 next week and am sad to say I am petrified. It's all a waiting game and everythg is up in air all the time. Thats how it feels to me. Hooe they get you on the right track hunni. Keep smiling
