SCLC and treatment

My mum has been diagnosed with SCLC limited stage and is undergoing chemo radiotherapy with a curative intent. However, her oncologist is only planning on giving her 3 rounds of chemotherapy and, for what I’ve read, this seems less than normally given. Does anyone have any experience of fewer cycles with SCLC?

  • Hi  everyone's diagnoses and treatment plan is different. No 2 people are ever the same, and nobody responds the same way to treatment either. Sometimes only radiotherapy is given, sometimes it is only chemo. When the 2 are combined the amount of chemo does vary. As they are saying they are giving mum the treatment as curative is a good sign. They normally scan about 3 month into treatment, so chemo may be given further after that time if they feel it necessary.

  • Hi Kitkam

So very sorry that you have cause to be on here.

Firstly that the SCLC is 'limited' is good news as this means it has not spread beyond the one lung.

Secondly that the cancer team believe that Mum's cancer can be eradicated is very positive,

Thirdly the  chemoradiation treatment can be brutal, especially if the patient has any other underlying health issues. or is an elderly person.  SCLC does generally work well with SCLC, especially in terms of shrinking the tumour,. This means that the radiotherapy aspect has a better chance of  treating what has become a smaller tumour.

The number of cycles of chemo can vary; I had 4 but was given the choice not to have number 4, which I declined. I know of some people who were given 6 cycles.

All the news  regarding the treatment is very positive. Please take comfort from that and try not to look for potential negatives.

    Hope this helps .

  • Thats so kind of you to keep posting. This site was a God send when both of my patents were diagnosed with cancer at the same time in 2017

    Both still here :)

This site does help as there is many positive stories about which was a God send to me as I didn't think there was much hope.

Glad I've just spent Christmas with them both 6 yrs on from there diagnosis.

Mum has a CT scan coming up on Sunday which we all get scanxiety until her results are back which seem like they take forever

Keep positive everyone and keep reading the positive stories Blush x

  • Hi Hope1972, again sorry to hijack someone else's post, but I was very pleased to read both parents diagnosed on 2017 are still with you, it's so encouraging to read that. My hubby has stage 3a nsclc and was diagnosed 31st Dec 2021 (happy new year) and underwent 6 weeks of concurrent chemo radiation and as at November 22 check with xray, all was OK Fingers crossed so to hear 6 years is music to my ears. I know everyone is different, but I am so pleased for you. Would it be possible for you to share what treatment your mam had.

It's lovely to hear success stories.

  • Hi Kitkam, sorry to hear your story about your mam, its heartbreaking to get a diagnosis of lung cancer, and my heart goes out to you and your mam.

My husband has stage 3a nsclc and has been treated with chemoradiation with curative intent. He had  treatment, Monday chemo and radiation, then the next 4 days just radiation, for 6 weeks.  I believe limited sclc is treatable, and from what you have said they are very positive and I hope that gives you some peace of mind. Everyone is different and needs different treatments. Her oncologist will have weighed everything up in coming to the decision to give your mam 3 rounds of chemo.

I hope all goes well for her and please take heart they are positive, and it is limited stage.
