hey everyone. As much as I don't want to be here, I need to talk. I'm new so bear with me x
Last night my mum was diagnosed with lung cancer after a roller coaster of a 4months, with pet scans, CT scans and mris and biopsys. Two biopsys came back as inconclusive. Me, my dad and sister thought we all dodged a bullet! We felt so relieved as we were so worried sick for months. My mum has clubbed fingers, a bad cough and lost a hell of a lot of weight. (In the back of my mind I knew it was bad news) I'm 26 and I have a 5 year old little girl, we all live in the same house. My mum did say the tumour was quite big apparently and has an operation on the 16th November. (Is this good news,??) As I've seen some peoples aren't operable.
I can't stop crying, having panic attacks, I'm holding a brave face for my mum! But behind the scenes I'm dying. She's my best friend. She didn't mention anything about staging, just that she is having 2/3rds of her lung removed. And apparently its a big op because its quite near the heart?
I really need some positive survival stories as I can't bear the thought of losing my best friend, my mummy. Thank you all so much for listening.

Hi Megan , I'm sorry you are having worries at the moment , you have come to the right place, lots of people here with be able to help. If your mum has been offered a operation thats a positive, I had a lobectomy 2 years ago half of my right lung . It wasn't as bad as I thought it would been , I also went through lots of tests, and lost loads of weight , it took a while for me to recover I was 73 at the time, not from the operation which was the easy part but from the chemo I had to have after, Once your mum has been given a plan , things should be clearer. please keep in touch and let us know how her operation goes . all the very best Ellen.
Hiya Ellen, thank you so much for your message, I am really struggling mentally today with it, if its big and near the heart its still operable right? How big was your tumour? Sorry about all the questions? Xx
Hi Megan , not sure about the tumour being near the heart , hopefully it should still be ok , but mine was bottom of the right lung , I could'nt have a biopsy as it was to near the liver. x
She has a phone consultation on the 12th, her op is the 16th .... What do you think they will say I'm worrying about that now.... I keep thinking they're going to change their mind on the op say its too late, but they've seen it still last week at the third biopsy, and when they called to diagnose the tumour he said operation on the 16th... So they won't change it now will they as they only saw it last week x
Try not to worry I know that's easy to say , but is sounds as if the opp will go ahead, Ellen x
Just wanted to add my thoughts -was part of the anal cancer group since 2018 but finding it impossible to log in again tonight yet again My thoughts are a bit all over the place just now. Have been all clear from anal cancer for six years. Went to the gp with right side rib pain at the end of August diagnosed with old age! (at 74). A month later pain in left upper arm and shoulder -told inflamed tendon and arthritis. No x rays or scans available!! Then problems with clenched left hand and immobility in left foot. Knew I hadn't had a stroke!! A week ago fast tracked to A and E by a very diligent nurse practitioner at the local minor injuries unit Quickly scanned three times. Diagnosed with new primary kidney cancer with lung, bone and brain metastases - 3-6 months with no hope of any respite such a shock within one week. But life goes on for however long or short a time! Can't change it!! Not such a Happylady now , but life is what it is! Moan and rant over, but couldn't find anywhere else to post! As always love to all. Mxx

Surgery isn't usually offered for advanced lung cancer, so the fact that your mum is booked for surgery is a good sign. Surgery is also usually offered with curative intent.
Staging will be confirmed after the surgery and will determine whether or not she needs additional treatment. Your mum's tissue will also be analysed for mutations which can be useful for determining targeted treatments.
Treatments for lung cancer have improved in leaps and bounds over the last decade, and more new treatments are being approved all the time.
Waiting for information is extremely stressful, but you'll have a much clearer picture of your mum's situation and future treatment following her surgery.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
