I’m confused my dad has been in a hospice for the last 2 weeks after he’s been in 3 different hospitals with chest infection first one for 10 days home for 2 days then again admitted again this time for 7 days pneumonia then home again for 3 days then another hospital for a further 8 days with the hospital then calling it HAP pneumonia, he then became very poor again and the ambulance refused to take him to hospital stating he needed palliative care treatment not a hospital any more and a difficult few days with doctor coming to see him at home he got a bed in a hospice, but his symptoms are different from the chest infections, now can’t swallow (been taken off off tablets ) food not at all still drinking but very minimal, confusion but not all the time some days he doesn’t know me at all , and generally very weak some days sleeps 20+ hours , basically the hospice asked where he wanted to be when the time comes for end off life , he said he wants to be at home so they set up carers ect to help me but after nearly 2 weeks I was told this although at the beginning off my dads diagnosis he said he definitely did not want to be at home as he lives with my mum who is disabled with health problems ( my dad was my mums full time carer ) and I clearly remember this conversation as he said promise me when the time comes I’m not at home , so after two days trying to explain this to the hospice as they said he still had capacity to make this decision although they did acknowledge he was confused ,We was told he was coming home to spend quality time with us and I was explaining what to look for as he got worse so I could contact them with the hope of him going back in to the hospice, and they said he should hopefully manage a couple off weeks with us first , Yesterday a palliative care nurse from another hospice came out to check on him as the hospice my dad was admitted to wasn’t the same me for our area as when he needed the bed the one he’s under didn’t have any beds , and she generally looked quite surprised at what we had been told around his diagnosis she basically said she needed to go back to her hospice to speak with doctors look at his whole history and scans ect and would give me a call before tues ? I’m really upset and very confused please help ? Louise Forgot to say my dad was diagnosed in March stage 4 lung cancer , mets on ribs kidneys and lymph nodes in stomach had chemotherapy and radiotherapy
Hi
I'm sorry to hear about your dad and what a hard time you're all having trying to sort his care out.
I can see that you also posted this in the ask a nurse section of the community and wondered if you'd read the reply yet? If not clicking here will take you straight there.
