Nausea and vomiting

Hi everyone

Just wanting some advice with regards to what any of you experienced with nausea and vomiting.

I'm having an awful time at moment and recently had admission into hospital last week due to nausea and vomiting after my day one of second cycle chemo. I'm on cisplatin and etoposide. The result of this admission meant I wasnt fit for day 2 and 3 of chemo. They put me on a syringe driver with levomepromazine while I was I'm hospital which appeared to help. Since discharge last Thursday I've continued to have horrendous nausea and wretching is making it worse with constant sensation of something stuck in my throat - side effect of radiotherapy.

I had nausea prior to my diagnosis which I was told was result of indigestion/heartburn. I was taking cyclizine for this at the time along with omeprazole. After diagnosis of sclc I was started on metaclopromide and levomepromazine and omeprazole was changed to lanzoprazole. This was all after first cycle chemo which floored me with nausea.

I'm managing small amounts of food but soft diet only. Does anyone else have experience of anything better for nausea and vomiting as I'm really fed up with this awful feeling and dreading the next cycle of chemo. I felt the syringe driver helped with settling it but not sure if I could have this at home. I've got one more week of radiotherapy after this week and two more cycles of chemo to go.

Xxx

    Hi Aquarius

Sorry you are feeling so unwell. I had horrid nausea on Cisplatin. They gave me the anti sickness for cycle 2 by IV which was better still not perfect.

For cycle 3 they switched me to carboplatin and this was way better for me.

Please speak to your team about what's happened, they can likely alter things to make it easier for you.

  • Hi

I started my SCLC treatment with this chemo combo. Fortunately I did not experience the nausea/vomiting ; however the cisplatin did increase the cancer related nerve damage symptoms. So my Consultant change the treatment to Carboplatin, which as said is the more gentle sibling of cisplatin.  The additional benefit of the change was that the carboplatin was only given on day 1 of the cycle, so days 2 & 3 of the cycle were undertaken a lot quicker.

Ask your Consultant if a similar change would be beneficial  for you; don't worry it will not impact on the effectiveness of seeing  off the cancer.

Good luck with the remainder of the treatment.
