I watched 'Me before you' last night for the first time as it was a freebie on the channels and it was the best film I have seen for a long time. I won't say too much so as not to spoil it for anybody that may want to watch it. It's regarding a person that is involved in an accident that leaves them paraplegic and how this affects and alters his life, his mood, how he adjusts etc.
Whilst very different to a cancer diagnosis I related a lot to his feelings about the long term impact it had on him before his 'old normal' and his now 'new normal'
It was sad and funny and touched on many things we may think and feel.
Still, it is guilty of being a romcom but not the standard Hugh grant meets yet another star, say Julia Roberts and falls in love with her without realising and her with him despite him being a socially awkward non PC character for the 100th time.
I like films that really leave you thinking after wards. Not into clichés or gore so this was a good one.
My other top ranking films for me of all time are:
Philadelphia ( I cry every single time without fail)
American History X
The Life Of David Gale (hugely under rated in my eyes, though not seen it since diagnosis and this could change how I feel about it now as one of the lead character is a cancer patient).
Anyway I wondered if you had any films that you love and would recommend for Sofa days that we so often have
Hi Gina
We watched Philomena last week which I think is a must watch. It’s based on a true story about a woman’s search for her son who was adopted. Very moving. I do like a film that is based on a true story. We saw Stan and Ollie at the cinema last week too, and that was fab. My go to film though is love actually, and If Hugh Grant really was Prime minister, he’d definitely get my vote.
I completely agree, "Me Before You" is a heartwarming yet thought-provoking film. It beautifully portrays the challenges and emotions of someone dealing with life-altering circumstances. It's a reminder of how we all face our own "new normal" at some point.
It's interesting to revisit this thread after 5 years and reflect on how films continue to resonate with us over time. If you're still on the lookout for great movies, you can check out the best movies out now. Even after all these years, there are always fresh releases and classics worth revisiting.
