Hello all! I'm new here and writing on behalf of my mother who is not fluent in English.
She has been diagnosed with early stages of lung cancer and has been offered surgery as the most relevant treatment, although radiation has also been mentioned to her.
She is so terrified of the recovery process of the surgery that although all doctors recommend it, she insists on checking the radiation route.
I'm here to try and get a better insight into what the recovery from surgery looks like, how does it feel and how long it takes, to try and give her a rather realistic view of what to expect.
If you or a loved one have gone through lung surgery recovery, I'd be extremely grateful if you could share your experience with me so i can relay the information to her and help her make the best decision for her.
Thank you all so much in advance!
my surgery was in july so i am a little ahead of you ,but listen to the doctors dont rush ,you will know your own body and when your ready ,take care
Hi Laura
Do you know anything specific about your mum's cancer and the type of radiotherapy being offered? Mine was low grade adenocarcinoma and I was offered SBRT. I chose that over surgery but it wasn't totally successful so in April last year I had a VATS lobectomy. All my margins and lymph nodes were clear so I didn't need any further treatment.
The hospital part of my recovery from surgery absolutely sucked, even more so because I tested positive for covid on day 5 and my discharge was delayed by another 3 days.
I complied with the instructions not to lift anything so I was pretty OK by the time I saw my surgeon at my 6 week follow up. My breathing wasn't affected by having one less lobe. The likelihood of your breathing being affected depends on your lung function tests, so your mum should ask her surgeon about that.
As the soreness from the surgery diminished it was replaced by a feeling of numbness and tightness. A lot of people describe it as like wearing a bra 3 sizes too small, and that's fairly accurate.
9 months out, I often forget that I only half half of my left lung.
