Quickish back story

Lung CA was found on abnormal cxr - fast forward blood/PET/EBUS done. Results rang in.. Lung CA has set up shop and has decided it also wants to take my mums liver & bones.. bast%*# disease!!!
Bloods taken again today.. would these be to check for calcium in the blood/tumour markers?
POA - chemo & Radiotherapy
Desperate daughter here who didn’t want to push an already understandably upset mum for any more info until she’s got her head around it all herself..
She’s seen the CA nurse who’s given her paperwork which I haven’t read (yet!)
But has anyone been in a similar situation - can you shed some light on treatment? How it went ect.. any positivity you have to spare? Advice hugely welcome
Youve all been so great so far replying to my rambles.. thank you all so much!

  • Hi ManchesterLady88x sorry to hear of your mum's diagnoses. I know that must of been a shock to you both.

There are a couple of recent posts in the group from people who have recently been through chemo. Has your mum been told a start date for the chemo? This may be why the bloods were taken, they keep a very close eye on bloods prior too, and during chemo.

Do you know what type of lung cancer your mum has? Have they mentioned immunotherapy at all? That is not suitable for everyone, but sometimes it is offered after chemo and radiotherapy have finished.

You could also look at joining a support group on the community where there are many other people in the same situation as yourself, caring for a loved one. You might find support there from people with experience of liver and bone cancer as well.

You can also call the Macmillan support helpline for support 7 days a week from 8am til 8pm on 0808 808 00 00

    Evening Chelle

    Yeah it’s squamous..

Im not too sure about immuno I think her head was reeling at the fact it’s hit bone and all the info that she’s not caught which treatment as we’ve spoken recently and she said yesterday to me it was chemo & radiotherapy one was for 4 months but hadn’t said cycles then she said it’s just chemo but the oncologist she saw mentioned targeted therapy and I thought that was radiotherapy (so confusing and I’m not a cancer specialist I’m fairly new to all this) but she’s said that *she thinks they’ve taken the bloods to see whether targeted would be ideal with it being in the bone*
Is there anything you could suggest food wise you could suggest as her appetite is in its boots with nausea (she’s on 2 lots of anti sickness) but she’s trying to eat but she’s saying everything tastes too sweet and then when she’s eating it’s either making her feel sick/be sick.. I’m clued up on how to help build people back up it’s part of my job so we’ve already gone down the complan path which she’s tolerating but she knows she needs proper food too.. any suggestions for blander things?
    Thanks for the reply

  • I can imagine how your mum was feeling, there is such a lot to take in. It is possible that they have taken a blood test to see if she is suitable for targeted therapy. I will put a link to an information page about target therapy for you, to give you an idea of what is involved.

When I was diagnosed I did not want to eat at all. Like your mum I just felt sick all the time. I remember I ate a lot of scrambled eggs. I would suggest your mum eats little and often, but also have the high calorie build up drinks that you can buy. This booklet might also help.

I am so sorry you are going through this with your mum. The positive thing to remember is they are offering treatment. There are a few of us who have been on treatment for quite some time now. Others have finished treatment and are now stable. If you click on our user name or picture, it will take you to our profile, where you can read our journeys.

It is a rollercoaster of a journey you are on. There will be many ups and downs, and it might be a while before you feel the ground beneath your feet again. Try to take each day at a time, we are here to support you, come and chat whenever you want. Sometimes it is good to just have a good rant, it help you to feel better to get it off your chest.

    Take care.

Hi Manchester lady .. I’m really sorry to hear about your mum.. it’ s so bloody awful .. does your mum have a respiratory nurse who is a type of liaison person for your mum ? My mum has one snd I often phone her with queries ( usually about pain meds) maybe a respiratory / lung oncology nurse ?  Maybe you could phone the hospital and ask the switchboard if they have one and to be put through to them.?  If not they could maybe point you in the direction. Fingers crossed you get some answers. . My mum has lost her appetite too. Feeling a bit sick but mainly just not as interested . It’s awful to watch or hear them say that . Would crackers and crisps help to stop the sickness prior to a meal ?? I honestly don’t know .  I can’t remember , your mum hadn’t started on any treatment yet ?
Funny my mum got bloods taken today and I was wondering what for . Mum has been anaemia and think they might be checking that . I work in medical field but cancer care is not my area unfortunately . Take care and keep posting and even just to get it off your chest xx

I’m not really sure I’ve not got into *into* with her just still trying to get our heads around it, but that maybe something I can look into so thank you for sharing that..

She fancies things but when they’re there they just make her want to vomit she’s eating bits of what she can and taking antisickness tablets to try and block it out but they’re not much help atm, she’s trying though that’s the main thing. I work in health care too so I’m aware of how to help build someone up trying to think of bland foods she may try..

Thank you - I hope you and your mum are keeping well.. x
