Hi everyone.
Just over a month ago my 49 year old mum had a chest X-ray & CT scan due to a mass on the lung. The only symptom she had was back pain and she’s had no symptoms since. She was told the CT scan shows a 7cm mass on her right lung with a couple of nodules on the left. She had to get a bronchoscopy and went for a meeting only at the start of this week to discuss the results. My whole family have been completely devastated by this as the word lung cancer was said to my mum from the very start. When the biopsy result day came we all expected to be told exactly what stage the cancer is and what treatment path to go down. However my mum was told that the biopsy results came back non cancerous but not to get her hopes up as it could just be due to inflammation and they would need to book her in for an EBUS to get a sample from deeper into the shadow (that’s another thing, the doctors have always referred to it as a mass but at the latest meeting it’s changed to a shadow?)
Anyway, mum had her EBUS this morning and is due to find out the results on Wednesday (everything has been very quick which I applaud the NHS for).
I’m just wondering has anyone experienced this before? My whole family was completely set up for the worst news when it came to staging etc but since the last biopsy came back non cancerous I am feeling so much more hope than I have done, should I not? Is it even possible for a 7cm (shadow) to be benign? It does seem quite large for it to be nothing. I’m trying to remain positive and how amazing would it be right before Christmas for this to all be over but then I know I could be setting myself up for huge disappointment. Has anyone even heard of something like this happening with a positive outcome?
Any stories/advice you have would be fantastic.
Thank you,
Christine x
Hi xtinemaggie
I’m sorry I haven’t come across this before. It’s such a rollercoaster this isn’t it. At least it’s not long to wait now. I really hope it is more positive news for you and your mum. X
