Hi I’m new to this group and am looking to hear more about other's experiences. I surgery for bowel cancer last year (January) and they found a tumour on my liver at my recent CT scan that was part of my annual review. So far the only appointment I’ve had where I was given information was a very rushed one with a liver consultant and the specialist nurse from his team. I was told that it’s only a small tumour - about 1.2cm and that I’d be having surgery this month (just got the date through for this). When I asked if I’d need chemotherapy after the surgery I was told “probably”. This is now my third experience with cancer as I also had breast cancer 12 years ago which resulted in five months of chemo and extensive surgery including a mastectomy and removal of lymph nodes, so as you can imagine I’m feeling pretty anxious about what’s happening. As the liver cancer is secondary to my bowel cancer will I definitely be having chemo? What’s other people’s experience of this? I’m also worried as I’ve read the long term prospects aren’t very positive for secondary liver cancer. What have you been told about this?
I have a different primary cancer (triple negative breast cancer) so my treatment path may be different. I had ablation on my liver tumours rather than surgery. They grew back. I then had immunotherapy with chemotherapy (had also had chemotherapy previously before I knew I was metastatic), then further ablation. I have held a remission since. Wishing you all the best.
I’m sorry to hear you are going through all this again. I had a spread to my liver last year and surgery to remove it. I recovered well and they said it was removed with clean margins, 3 month followup scans were normal so no chemo or further treatment then. My 6 month followup is a different story, looks like I have another spread and I’m currently waiting for another scan and the MDT meetings.
You’ve already been through major surgery so you’ll know what to expect from that but there are so many variations of what can happen to the liver so you will likely have to wait for more details of followup treatment. I believe if it is operable then that is the best in terms of outcomes. Hope it all goes well for you x
