Hello everyone. I'm a new member of this community , male age 88 and very fit for my age. A few days ago I walked 7.5 miles at 2.7 mph and climbed 807 feet. I fear change is imminent. In January 2022 I was diagnosed with liver cancer and had an operation in June of that year, In February 2023 i was informed that the cancer was still present and I have been offered treatment of either Immunotherapy combined  with targeted drug therapy or a single perhaps less potent targeted therapy drug (Sorafenib) . The list of possible side side effects is horrific particularly for the combination. Or of course I could decline treatment. Not an easy decision. I would love to receive any pertinent comments.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I haven't had immunotherapy or a targeted drug therapy but I have had chemotherapy and radiotherapy for a different type of cancer.

One thing you need to remember when making your decision is that the oncologist has to tell you every single side effect which you might get. However, you might get only a few of them or none of them. I know I'm really lucky because except for feeling a bit under the weather while having chemotherapy I didn't get any other side effects.

The other thing to remember is that usually the dose can be tweaked, if you respond badly to it. Ask your cancer nurse specialist if this would be the case for the type of drugs you might have. Also, you could start the treatment but stop at any point if you found the side effects were too much.

It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
