I had a nephrectomy 3 weeks ago via laparoscopic surgery due to a 11cm mass which was presumed cancerous. I couldn’t fault the care I received in hospital but now that I’m home I feel a bit isolated with regard to not knowing if I’m recovering as I should be. My wounds are healing well and I’m fine having short walks but I still can’t bend forward enough to do up my shoes or lay without extra pillows in bed. I’ve been a passenger on short car journeys and find it really uncomfortable. I don’t know if that’s normal or not? I was told in hospital that the surgery was successful and the mass was likely to be low grade cancer but it could also have been benign and I will know more when the histology results come through which will be in about 6 weeks.
I wish everyone well in their recovery.
Good morning, Kindwishestoall.
Firstly I would like to welcome you to the forum. I am Jamie one of the online Champions. My information is my profile, which will give you some detail of my own cancer journey too.
Recovery time varies from person to person but laparostropic surgery does tend to have a shorter recovery time. 3 weeks is still early days for bending and stretching, and even hoovering and cleaning. Even carrying heavy bags of shopping too. Often following surgery the outer skin heals quickly, but inside can still be swollen and sore and we are all guilty of forgetting the inside takes longer to settle.
I would take things easy and build up from there. My advice would be to give the urology nurses a ring and discuss your own individual times for when you can start doing more but take your time to let your body heal too. I didnt get in car for 6 weeks post surgery as the bouncing around and speed humps well they are not nice whilst sitting in a car either.
I am sure a few others in a similar situation and surgey will soon be along to offer their support and share their own experiences too.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can I support you with. I know waiting for results can be a worrying time and the anxiety can suddenly creep up on us too.
All the best,
Jamie
Hi Jamie
Thanks for the reply. Yes the waiting for results is a worrying time. I feel recovery is mental as well as physical. It’s good to have support
Its a mixture of both, I was up and walking about second day and managed to get out of hospital on day 5. Take your time though, you have had major surgery. I know mine was open surgery and finally last 5 weeks I have improved greatly. I took my time and listened to my body. If it hurt or painful I stopped doing things and rested.
If you feel anxious or worried whilst waiting for results, let us know. We have all had feeling of being worried, anxious whilst waiting. There is always support for you, and we are all here to help.
Best wishes,
Jamie
Age can have an impact at times, but internally always takes longer to heal.
So be kind to yourself and use this recovery time to do all the nice and relaxing things we often never have the chance to do. Its still very early days.
Best wishes,
Jamie
