Hi
Two weeks ago I was diagnosed with a 6cm tumour on my left kidney. I'm having it removed in 24th March
My consultant thinks it will ask go well but I'm worried about what they will find when it's taken out.
It was discovered when I was having a scan for arthritis in my hip.
Are they removing your kidney or just the tumour area? I had my left kidney removed just over a year ago aged 74.. everything seems to function fine on just one now. Good luck with the op and recovery . Be patient, and ask in here about anything that is concerning you afterwards. We all have slightly different experiences.
Good morning, JayneT.
Firstly welcome to the kidney forum, and I hope you will find it supportive. I am Jamie, one of the Champions and had right side kidney cancer. All my information is in my profile.
I fully understand how you feel and its all very normal and natural to be worried and concerned. I had to wait for my pathology results following surgery. This wait was a worrying time, on top of recovery too.
However, this did help to recieve a more definitive answer to the type of cancer and how best to treat it post operation. Not all cancers once remove, will require addditonal treatment but may need follow up scans and monitoring. This will all be discussed with you once you reach this stage, or in my case I was advised during my consultation with my urologist before surgery about the possible stages of treatment post operation.
At present, I would try not to worry to much (easier said) and the main thing at the moment they are removing the whole kidney.
If you like you to ask anything else please let me know. Happy to offer more advice and support.
Once again welcome to the forum.
Take care,
Jamie
Thank you for your reply.
I totally understand. I was so anxious and worried it had gone to my lung as well. Especially when I was told there was a very small indertminate lesion on my right lung from my urologist before surgery.
When I was told this, I went into panic and worry. But for some reason the radioiologist never reported it and it was not reported on again for my follow up scan. So when I saw my oncologist to discuss my treatment I mentioned this. So whilst there we looked at the scan together and its was there. However, since it not changed size or shape. He said it was nothing to worry about, and we compared this to the previous scan.
Anxiety and stress can present in may ways. But if you feel this is new or different, I would advise to ring you urology nurses who are very helpful and can offer some reassurances too. We all think the worse and the waiting game just adds to the stress and worry. Totally understandable.
If you like and feel up to it, give our helpline a ring and they can offer additional support too. I called and found the person I spoke with very supportive and helped to settle my mind a little.
Best wishes,
Jamie
