Hi I was wondering if anyone had recent experience of cryoablation (kidney cancer)?

  • Yes I have. What would you like to know ? I’ve also had a full kidney removal.
what would you like to know?

  • Hi

    thank you for replying,

recently diagnosed after discussions with my consultant we agreed to do partial nephrectomy I was referred to  the surgeon who is concerned about my ckd and possible bleeding feels it would be a better option to  consider cryo. It's new to me  I'm not familiar with the procedure guess I'm lucky to have options and time to think and just wondered what other people who have had the procedure felt about it

  • Hi - there's some historical posts about cryoablation, but the posters are no longer members.  If you put "cryoablation" in the serach box you should find them.    It's in the top left corner next to the "Home" icon.

  • Ok I was in a similar position in 2020 the accidentally found cancer in my left kidney and removed it. Unfortunately the annual  scan had missed cancer in my right kidney for two years as I only had one kidney and due to that de facto putting me in ckd classification  . They had the multidisciplinary meeting and said a partial nephrectomy or the cyro ablation I really struggled with which to choose but wanted least invasive and was impressed by the focus on detail of the cyro consultant so chose this. The pros are it’s quick and hardly any recovery time only in hospital overnight. The cons are that you removed the option of surgery unless it’s a full nephrectomy. Like wise if you had the partial and cancer return it means you could then have cyro. I had cyro ablation in April and was so relieved at the recovery time in comparison to the nephrectomy.( no daily self injecting and waiting 6 weeks to function near normal. )

They also prior to my decision arranged for me to meet with the dialysis consultant to explain what life might be like if I needed this with the likelihood being that temporary dialysis would be needed in recovery from a partial nephrectomy. Unfortunately they didn’t kill of all my cancer cells so I’m due to have a further cyro ablation this month.

that was my experience but we are all different. Hope this helps
