Kidney cancer metastasised to lungs - treatable but not curable

Hello!  I’m 73 years old and down one kidney since 2020.  Eighteen months ago I had my usual scan check up where they found it had gone to my lungs but nowhere else.  It’s fortunately still nowhere else thanks to fourteen months on Tivozanib and, as of the last 20 weeks on the immunotherapy drug Nivolumib.  Well, that’s it in a nutshell but, as I’m sure you all know, it’s not really been so cut and dried and still isn’t really.  I have different questions whizzing around my brain more or less daily and I think that the people who can help me with them are here, on this forum.  I have found that support from the MacMillan team at my local hospital is brilliant and my go to as needed.  I now feel ready to talk with other people in similar health situations.  There is a local group that meet’s monthly for cancer patients and their family and friends but I am unsure that I could cope with this at the moment. I hope that doesn’t sound precious, it just scares me. Is anybody out there that can identify with this long introduction?  I do so hope so, thank you.

  • Looks like you’re on a similar path to me, I had a kidney removed 8 years ago and has just started to metastasise to my lungs, I’m on a TKI called Suninitib but not on any immunotherapy yet. Just ha d my first scan since starting the treatment 3 months ago so no results yet.

  • Hello again and thank you for making contact.  How are you doing on your TKI, any side effects? I hope your scan shows positive results.  My TKI prevented my nodules from growing larger for some time.  Here’s hoping for a good response for you too.

  • Yeah the side effects are not nice, fatigue, sore tongue, high blood pressure, My Oncologist reduced my dosage so not too bad now, how long did your TKI’s work for ?
