Thank you to all the people who post on this forum, i've been lurking for a few weeks and thought it was time for me to say hello.
I'm 63 and live in Scotland. In spring 2022 I had a great time walking a 1,000km walk in Spain, finishing in early June. In July and August of that year I was treated for UTIs as I had blood in my urine. Following a 5km Dark run late October i started having a lot of blood in my urine. Was put on two-week fast track and an ultrasound scan found a large mass on my right kidney. Had a CT scan 15th December and a long wait over Christmas and New Year for the results. Saw the urology consultant end of January and was scheduled for a robot-assisted, laparascopic radical nephrectomy of my 12.5cm (yes, cm not mm, I didn't believe it either!) on 13th Feb 2023. All went well and keyhole (well, four keyholes and a letterbox) was possible. I was discharged the day after the op. Recovery started off well and I was out walking short distances three days post op. Unfortunately picked up the covid for the first time 5/6 weeks after the op but by early June I was feeling really good.
I had a follow up CT scan late May as there had been a couple of very small nodules (biggest was 5mm) showing up on my December 2022 scan and they wanted to check them out. Devastating news mid-June that there were now multiple nodules on both lungs. Early August 2023 met with oncologist and because of a history of ulcerative colitis (an autoimmune condition) he was unable to offer me immunotherapy at this time so i'm just about to start targeted therapy with pazopanib. I feel pretty good at the moment and am dreading the treatment!
Hi Evie.
Well done coming out of lurking mode. It takes courage but I’m sure you will find being able to talk through your worries and concerns or even just somewhere to sound off worth the decision to join our group. I wish I’d known about the forum years ago, just having like minded people to share experiences with has been so helpful and encouraging realising your not alone.
I fully understand how staggering it is to discover you have a large tumour hiding away inside you un-noticed. I had no knowledge of my 14cm tumour until I had scans for suspected gallstones. Even more staggering that they removed it along with my kidney by keyhole surgery. Clever devils aren’t they, thank goodness !!
Sorry that immunotherapy isn’t an option for you to treat the lung nodules but there are so many targeted inhibitors available and we all react differently to them in terms of success and side effects. I was on the trial for Pazaponib in 2014 and it did slightly reduce the nodules in my lungs. Sadly I experienced liver toxicity and had to be removed from the trial after a few months. It’s a shame because I hadn’t experienced any significant side effects while taking it and plenty of others completed the trial without the liver toxicity, As already mentioned we all react differently so it may well be that it will both suit you and be effective. But if this proves not to be the case there will be other options available to you and there are always new ones on the horizon. Reading your post it’s obvious you’re very fit ( just reading about the distances you walk and run wore me out). This will certainly act in your favour.
Keep positive and now that you’ve made contact keep in touch.
Sending hugs and good wishes
Rojan
Thank you Rojan, the onco did assure me that there would be other options if the pazopanib stopped working or I couldn't tolerate the side effects. It has really helped reading through this forum and the posts of yourself and others. I have my ups and downs as i'm sure everyone does but it does help to know there are others out there - my ambition in life now is to not die before my dad and mum (who are 90 and 87) and to halt the growth and spread of the mets - anything else will be a bonus.
All the best
Evie
