Bladder problems

I had a nephrectomy 8 weeks ago and I’m still having to get up two or three times in the night to go to the loo. Before the op I never needed to get up. I can’t really understand why having one kidney should make a difference. I stop drinking at 6.00pm. Once in bed I need to get up every two or three hours and my bladder is full. I mentioned it to the urology consultant but he didn’t seem very interested and said things would take time to settle down. Just wondered if anyone else has experienced similar and if they’ve got any advice on dealing with it. It’s not the end of the world and I’ve never slept very well but it bothers me.

  • Hi ChasM

I had my operation on the 12th June and I am having the same problem. I have not sought advise  but I was wondering if this is a problem after the operation. So looks like we both have the same problem

  • thanks For the reply - sorry to hear you’re the same.  Hopefully it’ll settled down I’ll give it another 4 weeks before trying the doctors.

  • 8 weeks is not long. The remaining kidney needs to grow to deal with the higher volume. Your condition will improve. Give it time.

  • Thanks, I hope it does. Other than that and a some pain at the incision site, which the doc says is nerve damage, I’m feeling much better - even doing some physical activity without needing to sleep straight after. Hope you’re recovering well from your surgery.

  • Thanks. I am a year in now. Pretty much back to normal all round. It takes time. That's all.

  • Good to hear, just need to be patient.

  • I was exactly the same after my nephrectomy 6 years ago. My urination pattern has never been the same especially at night. I tend to pass much less urine at a time nowadays hence the multiple visits to the toilet especially during the night.

  • Thanks for that - sorry to see from your profile that you’re having more complications now, good luck with the treatments.

  • Well I’m 66 years old now and still going strong (Fingers crossedFingers crossedFingers crossed). I’ve been on Pazopanib now since 2019 and although I suffer some of the drug’s side effects still I’ve learned to live with them by taking period breaks off the Pazopanib. Last week I had my first radiotherapy treatment which consists of 5 daily treatments concluding on Weds of this week. I refused the radiotherapy treatment initially earlier this year but due to the pain and discomfort I’m experiencing in the area affected (upper buttock) I’ve now gone ahead with it. Hopefully this will bring some kind of relief as my Oncologist says it will.

  • It’s good that you can stay so positive - good luck with the radio therapy, I took my mum for several sessions of that, maybe ten years ago, thankfully it didn’t have any nasty side effects for her.
