Six weeks since I had my left kidney removed, feeling much better but not fully recovered yet.
The consultant rang today to check on my progress and update me on the results. The cyst (18 cm)and kidney were malignant but the cancer doesn’t appear to have spread anywhere else. Good news but, having experienced losing both my parents to cancer, I know that being clear doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be the last I hear of it. At least todays news is positive and other than regular CT scans I won’t require any treatment. I’ve found this forum very helpful and thought it might help others to know how my cancer journey had progressed. I was counting up - its 17 weeks now since an ultra sound scan for something unrelated, showed that I had a huge cyst on my kidney - it’s seemed like a long time ago but really a lot has happened in four months or so.
Hi ChasM,
I think I have spoken to you before. I had my right kidney removed on 3rd June. Had a complication, when they wondered why I wasn't recovering as expected. Turns out I had a Haematoma in the area of the removal. Bleeding did finally stop, but I had to have a unit of blood. So my 2 day stay ended up being a week. I too had a US for something not related, when they found a mass on my right kidney. They removed a diseased 13cm x 8 cm kidney. While I was in hospital, I had a further 2 CT scans to determine my Haematoma. So I am hoping everything in that area is clear. I have had enough CT scan's to determine this. I have a telephone consultation with my Consultant next week, so I am hoping that is will be all clear. But will be interesting to know what they found with the kidney. Like you this all started on the 13th April, so it has been a roller coaster ride for me. I wish you well for the future. I hope like me you will stay on this group to pass on your knowledge
Kind Regards

Hi Chas
Similar sort of story, I had an ultrasound on the 16 April as I was having night sweats.
It showed a 7cm mass on my right kidney.
This was followed by a CT and an MRI due to suspicion about a bit on my liver, which turned out to be hemangiomas and not sinister.
June 7th I had a radical nephrectomy. 3 weeks later I had a meeting with my consultant to hear that it was Stage pT1b but grade 3. However they achieved good clear margins and no sign in lymph nodes. So CT scan in 3 months and then further CT scans thereafter. The surgeon said around a 10 percent chance of it causing further problems.
Physically I am recovering well, though I get tired very easily and I am not fit enough to return to my normal work as a self employed carpenter quite yet.
I started some counselling through Macmillan and Bupa last week, which I think will help deal with the psychological side of things.
Dealing with ESA(Dept of Work and Pensions)etc has been a major stress.
So onwards and upwards with fingers crossed for clear scan results
Jk
We’ve had very similar experiences- pleased to hear that, like me, you’re on the mend. Im a week ahead of you, my op was the previous week. I had a three day stay and came out with a catheter which was an added complication. I lost another stone in weight after the op having already lost two in the previous months. I’m glad I’ve retired from work as there’s no way I’d feel like going back any time soon.
Hope you get positive news from the consultant, all the best!
I must be your Doppelganger. I have tried for many years to lose weight, I was 16st 9lbs and if I dieted I could get down to 15st. But over the last 3 months the pounds have fallen off me. I think the kidney they removed, must of weighted a bit. But jokes aside. Hearing your experience has helped me. I can't understand, why I get up in the morning full of beans and then approximately 4 hours or so later I hit a wall. I am exhausted. I am so glad, I am retired. I do get a lot of headaches, but I am putting this down to the heat at the moment. I keep myself hydrated with plenty of liquids.
Best of luck ChasM
I think it’s very optimistic when it says you might be fit to return to work in 4-6 weeks. The first four weeks I hardly left the house and if I did I had to have a sleep when I got back. The mix of a big operation and the stress of cancer definitely leave you exhausted. Yesterday the consultant said that it’d probably be another six weeks before I was up to any physical activity.
Sounds like you’ve a good chance there won’t be further complications- mine was a category 2 cancer - I didn’t even know they categorised them. Hope you go on alright, it must be hard when you’re returning to a fairly physical job. Good luck.
Hi Everyone.
I have had my telephone consultation. The Biospy showed that I had a 13cm x 8 cm kidney removed, that was cancerous. The cancer was contained in the kidney. There are no signs, that it has spread to any other part of the body. I have been a very lucky individual. If you look at my profile, I wasn't due to see an Urogist for another year. God knows what would have been the result then. I would like to thank everyone on this site, for the wonderful support I have received, and I will also be around to input my support to others. God bless you all.
