I had a scan last Thursday morning, told the same evening I had a malignant tumor in my right kidney, only just getting my head around it. What happens next?

  • Hello, I expect that this would take a bit of getting your head around. Have you been referred to a urologist as yet ( sometimes it’s the GP who arranges scans ) ….if you haven’t been referred then this would most likely  be the next step. They may then do another scan to see whether there is any spread as this will influence the treatment.

Most of us on this site have had a bit of a shock to receive the diagnosis…..the stage that you are in now tends to be the worst as you have been given the news, but don’t have a treatment plan…….as soon as you know what is happening, it should be easier to start to get your head around things. I had an operation to have my kidney removed 5 months ago now.and am doing well. I do have cyst on my other kidney that they are keeping an eye on too.As soon as I knew what was happening it felt more under control.

Do let us know how you are feeling and what is happening. We have some lovely supportive members in this group and we all try to keep each other going Blush

    Sending you a hug,

    Jules x

  • Hi thanks for your response, l am awaiting a referral to the urologist, as you say, once the wheels are in motion and l am given more information, l think things will become a bit clearer and give me a better understanding of the situation.Thank you for your consideration. l will update all as and when. Hope all continues to go well for you and all out there going through similar issues.

  • Hi, I am in a similar position. Diagnosed last Wednesday with stage 2  with 8cm tumour on left kidney by a urologist. He said he was meeting with his team on Monday (this week) and I should hear back from hospital admissions re surgery date. Fortunately, I do not have any symptoms and feel perfectly normal so for the most part I barley think about it. I’m busy working and doing all the other things I normally do. In a way, it’s quite surreal!

hope you get some clarity soon. X

  • Hi, Kristine, like you, surreal is exactly my feeling at this moment in time, sort of limbo moments. Still awaiting contact from the urologist, any kind of discussion with the medical team would be more than welcome at this moment, would be some kind of confirmation as to where we are going. Hope all goes well for you soon. Take care all you peeps out there and be lucky, Terry. X

  • Hello and sorry to read this info.  Like others have said, the uncertainty and the waiting at this stage is the worst.   You want your Urology appt asap and they will likely decide if (a) removing a kidney is appropriate or (b) biopsy required or (c) drug treatment appropriate, likely to be immunotherapy or (d) monitoring / watch and wait.

Another critical factor is whether it's spread outside the kidney or not.

I'm surprised they told you so quickly. It's normally the Urologist's job to advise along with the next steps. That's what happened with me.

  • Its a shocker isn't it. ? Quite common for kidneys. The patient has no idea until it is suddenly found. In my experience they are likely to order a second scan then get you in to see the urologist pretty quickly. Potential treatments are dependent on the situation and variables. A worrying time for you I know but hopefully soon you will know what is what. May I wish you the best of luck anyway. This forum is a mine of info and support.

  • have seen oncologist another scan with contrast then 28th of this month start targeted therapy and immunotherapy

  • Glad they are getting started asap. Compared to the rest of the NHS cancer treatment seems to be quite well prioritised.

  • i have a fab oncologist Carey MacDonald Smith, hold nothing back but got good news from her, told initially had mets in liver and lungs, but no not a sign. So its just kevin as i call it and a number of nodes.
