Hi , Mum had her kidney removed yesterday and she’s seems to be coping okay .
The surgeon has said she will be going home with a catheter in . 2 Doctors this morning said it could come out . She questioned it and they have now said it has to stop in.
So I have 2 questions.
1. why would the doctors say it could come out
and
2. if she goes home with it how will it be emptied. I’m not a nurse so asking on behalf of Mum
thanks for reading
Hi AnnemarieH. I am from the bladder group, so my experience is different, but I have had my share of catheters. Removing it a day after a procedure seems a bit soon. It is by the discretion of the doctors, but they need to see the urine running clear with no signs of blood. If Mum comes home with a catheter, she will be shown how to maintain it. Emptying it is simple as they usually have a tap on them, and she may have a district nurse to check on her. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.
Thanks , a bit worried about her coming home with it in . Mind you we have not got a definitive date . Was told 2 days but first day doesn’t count .
