Hi I've joined to help my 82 year old mum who is having her kidney removed next Thursday . Wanting to find out more so that I can help her. Thanks for letting me join

  • Hi AnnmarieH,

I can't help much right now but i'm having my right kidney removed THIS thursday so i may be more help later on...lol.

Welcome anyway. Have a look around the forum. There is a lot of experience around here.

  • Hi , good luck on Thursday . I’m trying to gauge how much assistance Mum will need . I’m due to go away in 2 weeks but chances are I won’t be going as I will probably need to assist Mum which is not a problem .

  • Thanks, It seems too me the first couple of weeks are the worst. Pain discomfort and immobility. Then things gradually, slowly, improve from there all being well.

Everyone is different of course. So everyone heals differently. Is your mum in good health generally ? It would all affect the recovery process.

  • Hello,

I too am going to have a kidney out next Thursday 28th…but did hear that it’s a good idea to take a big cushion to go between the patient and the seatbelt on the way home. Also heard it’s a good idea to buy a bigger size of trousers JeansBlush.

I think it’s lovely you have joined the site to help your mum. You must be concerned as there is a vulnerability that comes with age…..but they will look after her.

Wishing you  and your mum all the best

    big hugs, Jules xx

  • I am 71 and had my left kidney removed last August by key hole surgery and as Del said she might need some help for the first couple of weeks.  Though I wasn't actually in a lot of pain just had paracetamols, it was painful to get out of bed to start with.  Also a bit painful getting in and out of a chair but this does slowly ease each day.  I also had to inject myself each day with blood thinning injections into my stomach or as some people here have done into the thigh.

Hope everything goes well with your mum.

    Take care

    Betty

  • Hello Betty, if I remember correctly, you were either the advisor of the big cushion on the way home or the bigger trousers Blush x Hope that you are doing okay now x love Jules

  • Hi Jules Yes I recommended the bigger trousers as my stomach did get a bit swollen after the surgery.  Also a cushion in the car is a must for travelling home from the hospital.

Hope everything goes well with your operation.

    Take care

    Betty

  • Hi Betty, have been thinking of you and bigger trousers lol Joy x just wondering how you are xxxx

  • Hi

I has my kidney removed 4.5 years ago. The first couple of days are painful but it does ease off.

Lots of fluids and lots of rest as ots very tiring and take the pain lillers when needed.

Hope she gets on really well.

    Lissa x

  • I just had one of those. The recovery does take time so dont expect too much too soon. Sadly as we age recovery takes longer too. Your mum is lucky you are there for her. Good luck to you both. Edit: Just saw how old this post is. Sorry.
