Hi, my husband is getting himself into a state because he was told by his oncologist he had two years to live. It’s now past that time and he can not understand why he is still here. We(his family and friends). Keep telling him not to think about that and live every day . He is 85 and was very active before his diagnosis, but with covid happening 2 months after his diagnosis he was confined to the house except for going for his treatment. Now he has no more treatment and he feels it’s just a waiting game. He gets out of bed every day but then sits in his chair, usually sleeping. I do try to get him out in the car as much as possible but he can not walk far only a few steps. He refuses to use a wheelchair. He keeps asking why he isn’t dead yet. Every night he says “I hope it’s tonight”I’m at a loss as to know how I can make things any better for him. Any ideas would be most welcome. Nicola.
Hi Nikki,
I had to respond to your message, if only to say what a lovely caring wife you sound. This situation must be so upsetting for you too as I would envisage that you would want to spend some happy quality time together. Also it can be hard to chivvy someone along when you have been going through a difficult time with this yourself.
Covid has got a lot to answer for…..it has reduced the activity levels of so many people, particularly older people…….I think that your idea of a drive out to give you both a change of scenery is a positive one.
Is there anything that gives him a bit of a spark? Maybe the grandchildren coming round ( if you have any),
I presume that you have spoken to your doctor about this as it seems that all the enjoyment has gone out of life for your husband and that is one of the symptoms of depression.
I am sorry that I don’t have any answers for you. Do make sure that you look after yourself at this time.
Take care, big hugs Jules xx
