Small kidney mass

I was diagnosed with a 3cm kidney mass in Feb. 2021. It’s being monitored currently and hasn’t changed in 8 months. Of course I’m worried as I don’t know whether it’s cancerous. I understand there are several different benign types of kidney tumour so hope mine might be one of those. The consultant can’t say without a biopsy. Another scan due in June so I’ll have to see what transpires then. Very scared.

  • Hi jenny

i had a similar instance 10/12 years ago, and was told that they wouldn’t operate on lumps below 40mm. Mine was in excess, and resulted in me having 40% of my right kidney removed. It’s not caused me any issues until recently when I was told the C had returned (same kidney) and was 45x50mm but, after 6 months tests they’ve now said it’s stopped growing (as has the spread into my lungs) so they say we’ll watch and monitor you. I’ve still not had any symptoms or side effects.

  • Hi I was diagnosed with a 3cm tumour in my left kidney. The consultant said he wouldn't offer me an operation. Because I didn't need it. Saw the consultant 3 times and the same thing each time but I ask could I have a biopsy I needed to know one way of the other if it was malignant or not. Because I was so anxious. I was previously diagnosed with PTSD  so I feel because how bad I was getting, they gave me one. It came back it was cancerous, another consultant gave us the news. A couple of weeks later was given a date for a partial nephrectomy. Its 6 weeks since my op and I'm doing well, so keep on at them. Which hospital you under

  • I think age may be a factor - I am 75; how old are you? I am under Yeovil and Bristol hospitals. They seem to be on the ball - Bristol has a renowned kidney centre. My next scan is in June. They have said they will do the operation now if I want but I will make a decision after the next scan.
