Unidentified mass on Kidney

Went to casualty with a kidney stone. Was offered an MRI, but as my bladder wants full enough the imaging was not great. However, the doctor told me that there was an unidentified mass on my kidney, but I would require a further scan to see whether it is a cyst or cancerous. Obviously panicking and fearing the worst. I had an MRI with a previous kidney stone 3 years ago, which showed a healthy kidney, albeit with one cyst and was wondering if it is a tumour how large it could have grown in that time.

  • Hi they found a mass on my left kidney had scan confirmed tumour had my kidney removed last October spoke to several doctors they couldn't tell how long it had been there could of been years they said regular scans tell growth

  • Thanks for the reply. I have been trying to work out annual growth rate as I know it wasn't there three years ago. My calculations are telling me under 3cm which I think is small. The A&E doctor wouldn't commit, but she did say that the mass was small, so I'm hoping if it is the worst case scenario it has not spread. What size was your tumour?

  • All i was told it large could of been there a while just had slight back pain it was discovered by accident I was getting shoulder pain went to see a lady who hurt happened to notice I had clubbed finger nails which is sight of kidney disease sent me for scan and got a letter by post saying I had a mass on left kidney which was removed like I said first phone call I  had said it was on both my lungs too scared me to death as noth parents died of cancer at 57 and I was 57 anyway went to Liverpool told me it wasn't on my lung scans been ok until last month now saying I've got a cyst  on my remaining kidney and something else there plus 2 large lymph nodes in the middle of my chest got to wait now till next scan in December its the wait I hope all goes well for you good thing is we have 2 kidneys hey x

  • Thanks for your comments. I am 57 as well, must be a particularly dodgy ageSmiley. Hopefully my scan will pan out ok. Hope everything goes well in December. As you say lucky we have a spare kidney, never gave it much thought until this week, I now probably have the equivalent of a degree in oncologyJoy

  • Good luck nice to chat to you always here if you need to chat im just hoping this bloody back pain goes wasn't this bad when I had the tumour cant complain hey 15 month ago after first phone call which I'm still very annoyed about giving me false diagnosis didn't think its reach 58 well luckily I have birthdaybon tuesday so its gonna feel good you take care its amazing what they can do now good lucj

  • Happy Birthday, make sure you have a good one!

  • I went to A&E with a pain in my side and had a CT scan which showed a mass on my kidney. Initially they told me it wasn’t too big and nothing really to worry about (based on the size of it and my age - 38) but the next day they came back to say they were more concerned as it was bigger than they initially thought (8x10x13cm). I asked how long it could have been there as I’d had no symptoms and they said it was probably slow growing and had been there for over 10 months. But without previous reference data they couldn’t confirm.

This happened less than a month ago and I am now 6 days post robotic radical nephrectomy. Whilst we are waiting for the histology to determine what the mass was I am so grateful for it to be out!

  • Glad it's out. Think by the size it had been there much longer than 10 months but as you say without a point of reference difficult to say. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

  • Hi I went in with suspected appendicitis, they did a ct scan and found the mass on my kidney in May this year. I was lucky enough to be operated on 6 weeks ago, they decided after 2 scans that instead of a partial kidney removal to remove my whole kidney, I’m am now up and about.

the whole experience is a bit surreal really, I think I would say…..ask the questions that you need to, and try not to read too much into every scenario. I’m amazed that I haven’t had to have chemo etc, my next check up will be in February, as they believe it was non aggressive.

    My tumour was approx 5.5cm.
Yes I feel very lucky, however as I say it is surreal.
