Hi everyone

i am new to this group and had my left kidney and an 8cm tumour removed by keyhole surgery over 2 weeks ago and had a spinal injection beforehand for the pain. Following the surgery I can only sleep on my back as its too painful to sleep on my side and I am waking up in agony with back pain, the only thing that will ease it is to get up.  Please can I ask you all if this is normal?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

  • Hi  I'm sorry to read about your back pain following your operation.

I'm actually from a different group and just noticed your post. I had an epidural for pain when I had my hysterectomy last year but I didn't having any last effects from it. I also couldn't sleep on my either side due to my op.

Until someone here comes along to answer, why not give your CNS a call for reassurance.

    Sending hugs, B xx

  • Hi hope you are having a good week in recovery from your surgery,I had my right kidney removed keyhole and open surgery in may with the spinal injection ,I found it difficult to sleep in any position other than flat on my back for the first 3 or 4 weeks ,it will get better just takes time ,hope this helps all the best Ry

  • Thank you B for your reply

  • Thank you Ry I think i just need to be patient and hopefully it will ease once I can move around more in bed. How are you feeling now it’s 3 months since your operation? I’ve had 3 weeks off work but still don’t feel ready to go back yet, I think I’m going to need at least another 3/4 weeks. Take care

  • Hi yes I think it's just take it day by day little steps everyone is different .

I took 2 weeks off work then worked from home for 2 weeks before going back fulltime to the office .

I'm doing well thanks back to as normal as it can be ,I swim a lot and after 4 months off I'm now back to where I was before getting diagnosed .

I had my 6 week review with my consultant a few weeks ago ,all was good but my tumour was found to be highly aggressive so I'm now on 3 monthly scans to keep track of it coming back .

Other than that all good keep smiling and hope it's a good day for you

    Ry

  • That’s good to hear about your recovery and glad that they are monitoring you closely,  I never thought I’d be on a kidney cancer forum but it’s good to know that I’m not on my own.  Take care and wishing you all the best for your reviews.

Hi. My husband had his left kidney removed last Friday. He is the same. He said the front is not that painful but his back is agony. He is taking pain meds foe the back pain.

  • Hi, I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one although I know that isn’t helpful to hear. It’s 3 weeks on Monday since my operation and I’m hoping once I get more active and can roll over in bed that it will ease.  It is a really dull ache across the middle and base of my back which makes me feel nauseous, is your husbands in the same area?

Hi, yes across the middle, he has no appitite but that could be the pain meds he is on.  I am hoping when he gets his staples out on Monday (all 78 of them) he might feel a little more comfortable.

  • Oh dear, 78 staples that’s got to be uncomfortable, luckily I had stitches but my pre-op nurse mentioned I might have staples.
Hope he feels better soon and makes a good recovery, take care
